Hi Phil,

I dont want to seem to be rude, but from previous experience with a company called Macromedia i can tell you that it is almost impossible to get anything done in China when it comes to copyright infringment. To put in bluntly they dont care, trhe same seems to apply in Russia.

Phil sets up a link to pconline, declaring you can see a 'reduced value' version of his reviews there? Then, when someone does a lookup for digicams, they'll get Phil's site because it references pconline's site? That is, if it's included in the hit list! J Those who are savvy and can read a bit of English just might start coming here first!

pepper his DPReview with the phrases like:

Communism sucks
Taiwan is an independant country
Remember the slaughter at Tiananmen Square
It's time to replace the corrupt rulers of China

If the Chinese officials saw this on the offending website, they would probably arrest the owner.

Crazy, but it might work...though I don't think Phil will go for it.

I wouldn't condone criminal activity, obviously. Theft is theft.

But the following comment:

"I guess when your a country of millions of people and cannot think for yourself then you must rely on stealing from other countries."

... sounds to me like a simple prejudiced insult.

I have seen no evidence that the Chinese are incapable of original thought nor that the only thing "they" i.e all 1 billion of them can do is steal for a living.

Every nation and every culture has criminals, let's not make the mistake of tarring every individual.

Perhaps the above was simply badly expressed?

I'm not attempting to defend the honour of the current Chinese government. There are many people around the world who live under the yoke of a government that does not act in their interests. I have some personal experience of the government of which you speak; I don't need to be persuaded of what they are capable.

But, the fact remains that just because a person, a group of persons or even a government acts in a particular way there is no excuse for bundling up everyone who is anyway affiliated with them and treating them as if they were one cupable individual. No doubt the great majority of the Chinese people have absolutely nothing to do with the theft of intellectual property and no doubt they have every bit as much creativity, originality and honesty as any other culture.

I'm also quite confident that there are large numbers of western businessmen entirely happy to be making their fortunes in China who's scruples are not offended by the current Government's history at all - as long as they keep making good profits. This fact alone kind of removes the west from the possibity of occupying any moral high ground.

It's a messy old world out their and ethics is probably the first casualty.
It is clearly extremely unfortunate for a legitimate business that
these people behave as the do and apparently are beyond the reach
of any normal channel. But that fact is absolutely no excuse for
racist comments on these forums.

If it is the "culture" of the Chinese Communist government to
ignore copyright, as decades of evidence proves, then what are you
objecting about? The facts are the facts and THOUSANDS of other
legimate companies have products that have been copied and sold
with the blessing of the Chinese Communist government. Your
comment about "beyond the reach of any normal channel" simply means
that the government endorses such conduct...PERIOD.

Maybe some clever supporter of your site (which ROCKS) can hack the
Chinese site and put them out of business for a while.

Good luck!

I was thinking something along the same lines.
Hide them balck on black or white on white!

Then the Government search engines will find them and off to prison for the site owner!

In view of this site's intended audience and the geographical distribution of your own cutomers, is this violation of copyright likely to cause you significant financial loss? If not, maybe pragmatically you might be better off saving your energies to chase violators closer to home and put this one down to one other bad thing that happens in an imperfect world?

I don't know the facts so I might well be talking out of my hat buts it's a thought to consider...

It cost me nothing to post the news article, however I don't believe that I should be working 100 hour weeks to provide content to other sites which they then post as their own material, and sell advertising on those pages. Those advertisers and readers believe the content to be original.

How does what you say make it right?

It seems from GuangDong Province.

About China, they have their own DNS which control all flows and restricted to certain sites. Just add something about politics or support certain political event. They won't be able to visit your site any more due to their special DNS setting.

If they still visit your site after thet, you may write an email to their government explaing Pconline.com is visiting a foreign political site. They will handle them sooner then you think. :)

China is just now emerging from the dark ages regarding intellectual property. Many of the intellectual property laws that post-industrial countries enjoy are completely foreign concepts in China.

Many average Chinese folk have never even heard of copyright, let alone begin to understand the concept of intellectual property.

Tis one reason why piracy (as we define it) is so rampant in China. Too many Chinese don't understand that what they are doing is wrong, by standards other than their own.

I'm not defending the practice or denying that willful piracy (ex. know it's wrong) goes on in China. I'm just proferring a truth that many Chinese are unaware.

Anti-leeching, yes. But not screen captures.

Screen captures from a regular browser are impossiible to prevent without some specialized active-X control to prevent it. That cure, IMO, is worse than the disease.
Shame tactics, of course, don't work. It doesn't even work in the
US with eBay sellers doing the same thing with our images and text
content, and eBay never ever replying to even one of our
complaints. Hey, if eBay doesn't care enough to go after them,....

Phil, why not simply prevent image leeching and replace with an ad
message (might as well get some free ad value out of this) as I did
for the eBay violators?

Kind regards & Good luck,
Yin

Doing that will jeopardize future endeavors in China.

Let's do something drastic to them but less damaging to us: sabotage their message board and bomb-post links to the victim sites claiming that "It is where the ORIGINAL, UNCENSORED" reviews come from.

It'll drive their readers to the real sites and the word "uncensored" will put them under government scrutiny.

Sounds like a good idea.

doing text in black and white gif is a good idea

hiding pro tawainese messages in chinese in the images is another one.....

maybe the image file names as well the page descriptions should have pro tawain slogans in them, and then let the PRC goons know about it..
