PBase down?

This has happened before and forums fil lup with comments such as "last straw" "useless" "i'm switching!"

In the end, very few switch. Pbase announces a extra month free for the hassle and most people realize the hassle of setting up a new hosting site. For many of us we have friends on the system that are regular visitors to our sites so we're reluctant to leave the community.

Besides, for the cost of a week's worth of latte's at Starbucks it's not like we're paying a lot for pBase!

I don't know about pbase and oracle but the MIS people would be in deep s--- if this happens in my company, if they still has the job.
In my company where I used to work...the imbecile asskissers kept their jobs...and some of the good programmers were laid off.
you're not in the same place anymore?
Cheers!

you have slug and the oracle boys on it. doesn't that inspire confidence :)?

I hope you're right! I hope only a few people switch.

I thought about switching to smugmug...but now I have decided to stay in pbase...and start a new account in smugmug...2 accounts are better than 1. I will be more selective with my smugmug shots.
Besides, for the cost of a week's worth of latte's at Starbucks it's not like we're paying a lot for pBase!
I'd be happier if they increased the price...only if they will give us significantly better service.

I do like the format in pbase better overall...plus I don't want to miss the community there.

Cheers!

Danny Tuason :)

PS IMHO...Starbuck's is overrated...but I get your point.

pbase reminds me of a company like GM that overestimated customer loyalty and like GM it's been in decline for the last few years and really isn't doing much to upgrade its service.

No...photonius. I was let go last month. In our company they kept people by seniority...not by your "value" to the group.

I do have some prospects now...one that will pay 37.5 % more...but I am not counting on it. I know some people who lost their jobs last year...and they are still unemployed. The worst situation is sometimes both husband and wife are unemployed. They'd be lucky to keep their house. My sister knows one couple who lost their jobs, their home, and now live with the guy's parents. They have 2 kids too. That s@cks!

As soon as I finish wrapping up my pp of my tennis shots, china shots, and a wedding...I will start to shoot more landscapes and cityscapes here in Socal.

How about you photonius? How is life treating you? Still in Sweden?

Have been a customer for years but pbase has had lots of issues during the past 12 months. Kept going back but this is it for me.

Smugmug...here I come.

don't get me wrong...I'm a die hard pBase user!

I've just accepted the minor glitches every once in a while as part of the service offerring.

When you think about what you're paying it's hard to get all wound up over the amount of down time.

Sure you can switch to smug mug but their code is harder to learn (imo) than pBase and it isn't the same type of community feel.

...agree that Starbucks is way overrated ;)

And the cause of leaving pbase (well, I still have some months paid, but I'm not going to renew my account) was the many issues I was detecting...

Now this make me feel like I did a good movement...

I hope your posting here doesn't deter future employers.

Your system of laying off people sounds exactly like here. Funny that so many people in the US are so "spooked" of anything "socialist" even when it's not socialist, and don't want to have anything to do with it (health care for everybody, how horrible, ...etc. ), yet this employment system is a very socialistic one....
I do have some prospects now...one that will pay 37.5 % more...but I am not counting on it.
Good luck with your search and I hope you'll soon find something.

Well...in a lot ways the system here is socialist too...it's just that people are hush hush about it.

IMHO...and I hope nobody gets offended by this...I think a compromise solution will help.

Health care for all...yes...but it should be managed properly...usually a government run program is mismanaged especially in the US...too much corruption I guess. I doubt the US government can implement it properly. Knowing their past history they will bungle it up...just like the present stimulus packages. In the long run these stimulus packages will hurt America as it is pile deep in debt. The US government tries its best to promote its lie that it creates jobs...but it just can't...businesses create jobs. Looking at statistics it's the small businesses that created the most employment in America and yet the US government isn't even helping them.

Analogy? Hmmm! I like cars...BMW...just look at BMW. Their chief designer was Chris Bangle (luckily he is now gone!). Well this guy bungled the job. Just look at the current 5 series (FUGLY!...f@cking ugly!) and the 7 series BMW's (another FUGLY design...a cheap imitation of the Lexus bumper integrated exhaust (also ugly)...ugly horn like rear lights...(like designed by Homer Simpson)...ugly ugly front...reminds me of the old Buick sedans)). The BMW's are still excellently engineered cars...but are really really ugly with few exceptions...like the 3 series.

BMW should be glad it doesn't have Chris "Bungle" Bangle to head its design team.
It's as if Buick and Pontiac designed the BMW...yuck!

So I say...don't let a fool handle the US government...IMHO Obama is a pied piper...excellent glib talker...very smart in handling people by his poise and excellent speaking skills...but there it ends. Lots of the major presses prop him up as if he's some sort of hero. Well his predecessor...Bush...he is an idiot too. I just want to show you I am not partisan.

More...I think a major overhaul should be done...but I don't think it's ever going to be done. The powers that be in the US Federal Reserve...that's where the real power lies...and I don't think they will ever relinquish that power.

Even more...I think they should stop giving benefits to illegal aliens.
First of all they don't pay taxes...so why should they get benefits?
I do have some prospects now...one that will pay 37.5 % more...but I am not counting on it.
Good luck with your search and I hope you'll soon find something.

Let me put it this way. I don’t know if the government is able to run an efficient health care system but I sure know the private industry is not able to. Look at the medical mess we have now, not to mention what has happened in wall street. What would you care if you own stocks of, or run one these companies? Your stock price, salaries and bonus or the well being of the public? US spends 28% of its GDP on medical care, (much) larger than the entire GDP of most countries in the world. An efficient system? I don’t think so. Also don’t think government’s hand is out of this just because it’s a private industry. You know how those lobbyist and legislators got paid? A hint: it’s from part of the 28% GDP.

Funny thing is that you seem to like the present system even that you’re just out of employment and I assume insurance coverage too. My son lost his insurance coverage when he was laid off a while ago. I know it’s really not a good position to be in.

BTW I think you have listened too much of Rush Limbaugh and Glen Beck likes. No one in the right mind would equal the intelligence of Obama to GWB

Actually my statement is not accurate.

Bush was an idiot.

Obama is much smarter than him...but IMHO he is using his wit to lie to the people.

That is all!

That is my honest opinion!

If it contradicts your opinion, I am sorry. Like I said in my original post, I hope I don't offend anybody.

This is again my opinion...

Obama backtracked on a lot of things he said...

some examples (there are more...)...

1. He will pull back the troops...

What he did was let the troops stay there indefinitely...and added more troops.

2. He promised to back away from NAFTA...

Hmmm! He seems to be supporting NAFTA...

He said he's going to impose taxes on companies that support outsourcing....hmmm! Words...but no action.

I hope I am really wrong about my opinion regarding Obama. If I am I will be the first to admit it...I will bow my head in shame...and be glad for the American people!

Carl...I really seriously hope I am wrong on this!

More...I hope your son gets a job soon!

I typed a long reply yesterday, but either I forgot to press the post button, or it was taken away.
Health care for all...yes...but it should be managed properly...usually a government run program is mismanaged especially in the US...too much corruption I guess.
Do it like Switzerland, public and private health insurance companies competing with each other. Therefore the public ones have to run effectively, and the private ones can't run amok with prices and kicking people off willy nilly.

And people (not companies) pay their own insurance, so they can choose whatever they like. If you want to spend more money, you can buy more expensive insurance, e.g. to get a private bed in hospital, or access to private specialists.

Those people who can't afford the insurance (loss of job, too little income) get government subsidies to pay for the basic insurance.

No place is perfect, I complain about the health system in SE as well, but at least I am covered. In contrast, the US is still like a third world country in this regard.
I doubt the US government can implement it properly. Knowing their past history they will bungle it up...just like the present stimulus packages. First of all they don't pay taxes...so why should they get benefits?
Well, what about Sweden, we have more refugees from Iraq than the US, due to some ^ % &. And we support/pay for them with our tax money.

Perhaps easy to understand why people here don't like USA, and are so happy to see a change.

But Obama will have to fight an uphill battle. I think he's honest and wants to do the right thing, but fixing the mess of 8 years of mismanagement will be hard, and the opponents throw every wrench they can find into his gears.
I do have some prospects now...one that will pay 37.5 % more...but I am not counting on it.
Good luck with your search and I hope you'll soon find something.
Thanks photonius!

Also, look at whether the site has an open API that supports migrating away. For example, you can import your stuff to SmugMug from Phanfare (our competitor) and vice versa.

Of course there is always a huge amount of lock in with a photo hosting site in terms of learning curve and the time required to recreate meta data that does not get translated, but some sites try to make it as easy as possible.

It all comes down to how customer focused the company is. If you are truly customer focused, and your customers want to leave, you help them with that!

Are Pbase gallery counters working?

In my galleries they seemed to have stopped working 2 hours ago.

Can somebody please confirm this?

Thanks!

Cheers!
