Carl,

I am glad you posted your review of the P10 after I had ordered my GRD III, otherwise I would have spent another few weeks agonizing over whether to get the GXR P10, with a view to getting the 28mm unit later, or the GRD III.

Hopefully, my GRD III will arrive today.

I, too, will be interested to see the RAW capability of the GXR P10.

Calvin.

You're welcome Calvin. I was waiting for you to decide it seems! :)

I had a look at a couple of 800/1600 ISO raw files in ACR last night. There is definitely more detail there, but lots of hot pixels that will have to be removed with NR software (in low light shots that is). Otherwise plenty of detail and the grain looks remarkably uniform, not what I'm accustomed too with compact cameras.

Stewart, I can get you one and send it along to the UK if you would like, really.
Thanks, it's something I might consider at some point although I've no idea what the import duty would be. I suspect I may end up getting a GF1, though. Meantime I'm busy selling a pile of Pentax lenses, a Fuji F72EXR and a GX8 to raise the funds, so I have some thinking time :)

hello carl,

i just found the p10 manual online on the ricoh site.
for my understanding it fairly limits the settings of
the lens aperture in P and A mode ... alas i didnt
find information about full manual control. is the
p10 module also limited to 2 fstops (wide) and 3
fstops (tele) in manual mode ?? i'm a little bit dis-
appointe in this respect. thi looked a litte bit dis-
appointing to me. almost the same aperture limits
as with the hx5v :-(

thanks for you help
ulrich.

Yep, it's most probably the same also in M mode. I'm sure Carl will confirm that.

You should not forget that P10 is based of CX3 with new processing engine, RAW and some other GXR goodies. But there is no proper n-blades shutter like in higher Ricoh models (GRD, S10, A12, etc...). So this is why you cannot select all apertures. Just F3.5/7.0 at wide and F5.6/7.7/15.4 at tele end.

That is disappointing.

Even the MSRP $350 Canon SD4000 which uses the same sensor has true aperture blades and therefore a full range of selectable apertures.

Well, it depends. $300 P10 got RAW and $350 SD4000 does not ;) I know, it's rubbish comparison if you are going to buy the whole kit. But for existing GXR users $300 is a reality!

If I should decide between the RAW and real aperture control, then RAW wins hands down. Seriously guys, what would you like to select the aperture for? The sensor is so small that there is no chance to play with DoF outside the macro mode or tele end focused at very short distance. RAW is a real advantage in cameras like P10, or SD4000. Real aperture control is (in my humble opinion) a gimmick feature in this camera class (cameras with sensors smaller than 1/1.7").
That is disappointing.

Certainly to some extent this is true, I remember trying the GX8 aperture settings when I first got mine and being amazingly unimpressed with the differences between the (three only) (DOF) settiings. But it does give you something else to play with I suppose, makes you feel like a real photographer. I have long given up trying to a compose stuff using aperture settings on the GRD and other small-sensor cameras, I really find this feature quite pointless on cameras which can be so wonderful in many other ways, and agree that OOF backgrounds can only be produced in the manners you mention. This is not a problem at all, it´s even quite fun in that you have to compose differently to get the effect you want and you have the advantage of getting practically everything in focus at almost any aperture setting under P+S conditions. To be quite honest I hardly ever use the A,S,M positions unless I´m doing long exposures. But there again I am just an amateur, so what do I know? Now if we had F1.8-F22 to play with...but we won't get that until the GXR lens mount turns up.
