Opening files in Photoshop from NX Studio

Hi

I recently reinstalled NX Studio to update it for Z8 files. I usually use NX to view and rate my NEF photos and then use Open With "Photoshop" to edit them in Camera Raw and PS.

Now, when I try to do it - it first asks me to choose the conversion format for photos opened in PS - i.e. TIFF (16 or 8 bit), JPEG, or "original image file". Then, no matter what I choose, I get a pop up that Access to selected file/folder is denied.

I dont remember having these issues in previous NX versions. Any advice?

PS: I can open my NEFs from Bridge or directory from PS (they correctly open in Camera Raw first). So the files are fine. But I want to be able to open them from NX, since I have always used it for viewing and rating.

Thanks

Did you update PS and ACR recently to support the Z8? If not, maybe update PS and Bridge to the latest version first and then try again. I think if you're using one of the HEIF formats, that may be a problem, but lossless compressed should still be fine at least. I think some people were also having problems with HLG photos too maybe were having a problem.

You must use the very latest version of PS and Adobe Camera Raw

Thanks both. But my PS and CR are up to date, and I am able to open and edit files in Photoshop and Camera Raw - but only if I do this directly from those programs or via Adobe Bridge.

So I think the issue is with NX Studio which, for some reason, refusing to open files in Photoshop.

Any luck on the original query?
I'm facing the same issue!
Hi Priya.

Yes - by going to NX Studio's "Options", then choosing tab "Open with Application" and changing the destination for files opened in other applications (I just chose a generic pictures folder). This allowed me open the photos with Photoshop directly from NX Studio.

Unfortunately, however, I have since experienced a different problem. Let's say, I want to open a RAW photo in Photoshop via NX Studio. Such raw file opens in Adobe Camera Raw. I make adjustments in ACR and then close ACR. Previously, I could subsequently reopen the same file in ACR via NX Studio, and it would retain all the ACR adjustments that I have made earlier. Now, however, each time I reopen a file in ACR via NX Studio, it opens the original 'clean' raw without my previous ACR adjustments.

I assume this is the way for NX Studio to force you to use itself as the raw converter. I.e. it is possible to perform raw adjustments within NX Studio and then open the edited file as TIFF in Photoshop (bypassing ACR). However, I was not able to find a way to reopen the raw file in ACR with saves adjustments.

If someone knows the solution - would really appreciate you sharing it. I have used NX software for years simply as file management software (rating photos, etc), while using ACR / Photoshop for editing. However, this issue is forcing me to use Bridge, which I like less than NX Studio.

BTW, the issue I described in reply to Priya does not only affect my latest Z8 files, but also all the adjustments I have make over the years in ACR (via NX) to my D810, D850, Z7 photos.

I think NX Studio sends files to other programs as TIF files which is perhaps why you don't retain the settings from ACR when sending files from NX Studio. OR when you launch Camera RAW from Bridge or PS, it instructs ACR to also read the XMP file, which NX Studio may not do. (This may be the likely reason though, since in the ACR options you can choose whether it stores edits within files or as side-car XMP files, of course this only applies to non-proprietary RAW files, but can apply to things like TIF or DNG files). So it may read the setting when ACR is launched, but not when it's launched from another app (with the exception of Photoshop perhaps).

Thank you, and I think you are absolutely right. It was not like this in earlier versions of NX Studio, but it is now.
