Once again! Please Phil, split this forum..

when you're writing the words, instead of speaking them. You're a real stand up guy, (no matter what Jarrell says about you, lol ;
I was just needling you for borrowing "my suggestion" (which I'm
sure I stole from someone else) about putting camera IDs in subject
lines.

I don't have any standing on the slr forum, but having gone through
a painful thread split on the NTF, I hope your suggestion is given
serious consideration, and that you guys manage to keep this fine
forum intact. The common bonds of being Nikon dslr users and avid
photo-hobbyists would seem to be more meaningful than the
differences in build quality of the cameras.

. . . beyond the level warranted or to cause any embarrassment, just felt (and feel) that one promoting an idea deserves glory at least equal to, but probably greater than, the one who originated it. Hell, even I have ideas.

Most of the topics proposed so far are those that would make sense in understanding a NIKON environment versus a Canon environment. I have lots of experience with the Coolpix family of cameras back when I was basically a film shooter and used the Coolpix as my "everywhere" camera, and the things I learned with the CoolPix (including RAW processing) gave me a huge leg up when I had to rent, and then bought, Nikon DSLR.

I also have a reasonable amount of interaction with folks using Canon and Fuji DSLR, and the things they talk about are almost exactly the same things. I'm speculating that the answers are different based on some workshops I've taken taught by Canon junkies, and the now-ubiquitous "digital photography" books, which can be less than useful, sometimes misleading, depending on which camera you have.

So, if all the topics that people think are repetitious are applicable across all Nikon DSLR, why would we want to split the forum?

Nevermind.

Can we get someone to go as point person with Phil? I think the FAQ could become the most bookmarked pages on the digital photography streams on the internet.

Once again, we are smarter collectively than any of us are individually.
This is definately something that would help immensely on pretty
much all of the fora here. Naturally, the big issue with FAQ pages
would be that it is something that would require continuous work
that Phil doesn't have at the time. This is why I originally
figured that the forum split made more sense, as it is something
that wouldn't need to be maintained - you just do it and the users
can do the rest.

If Phil is open to allowing others to assist him in maintaining
FAQs it would go a likely be possible - I'm sure that there are a
lot of people who would be willing to help. The problem is that in
the current setup it seems that Phil and his wife pretty well run
everything on their own - thus adding in authentication and
security for such a system could be a substantial task in and of
itself. Running a system where you implicitly trust all of your
staff is a lot more difficult than running a system with staff that
need variable levels of access to the system ;)

If such a system was practical though I think it would do a lot for
these fora - the search system is considerably overtaxed and
usually doesn't work, so it is sometimes very difficult to find
information even when it is plentiful. It would be a significant
advantage to new users, veteran users and the site's servers alike
  • especially at this point, where a new low-priced camera is on the
near horizon and is just about to bring many new users into our
fold ;)

Naturally, however, this is up to Phil so he's the only one that
can really respond with the practicality of implementing something
like this. Hopefully he isn't sick of these threads and isn't just
ignoring it ;)

Now that the D70 will shortly hit the streets and the D2X is going
to be announced very soon, I think it's high time to split this
forum into two seperate forums: D1/D2 series forum and
D100/D70/D100X(whatever?) forum. It's not the first time I'm
raizing this appeal to Phil Askey but IMHO now is the time. What do
you think?

It was never my intetion to suggest an "ego centric pro" point of view. I do however like the forum the way it is with every one mixing together. I am an amature photographer and enjoy rubbing elbows with great shooters. I think that Steven S has the best sugestion adding a FAQ page at the top, to address common questions. the but I will be dependent on the first few months on questions in the regular chat forums before Answers will exist for new equipment like the D70. I think that in most cases we will see an easy intergration of new users like we have will all new nikon camera anouncements. Most recently with the D100 and D2H. I have not seen any problems with these new users, my self included.

Michael Worley, I usually don't sit on the fence when it comes to making a decision on which side to sit. In this case however, I don't see either merit nor a disadvantage to splitting this forum.

Perhaps it is because I really don't know where you and the proponents are going with this.

I followed this thread with interest to see if there was a unanimous support to split this forum and frankly there isn't!

The number of hits in this forum are not so high that one has to wade through massive amounts of less than useful information and comments. Which, by the way, is the case in Canon's "EOS-1D/1Ds" forum.
So, for now I don't see an advantage in splitting this forum.

Finally, on the whole this is one forum I like to visit. I find that many contributors have valuable input and regardless of their English language skills are very lucid.

It would be a shame to diminish the usefullness of this forum for the few that think they are better than...
Cheers,
Michael
