OMD EM1 mki - Poor Resolution... What'd I do wrong?

Here's an example from the same day, same light... just looks like high ISO I suppose. Perhaps I'm just accustomed to 24mp and my 1.8 35mm Nikkor...

I wouldn't doubt that the 12-50 would not be as good as a better lens, but to me the problem in this image is that the three central subjects are moving too much: you should have used a faster shutter speed. I can tell that in this image because even at edge of the frame right, the girl is sharper than the three central subjects.
Yes... a f1.8 lens on an "automatic" type setting will give you a higher shutter speed most the time. With a slow kit lens you need to intervene through a few different ways to be sure to get subject motion frozen. A shot of kids moving around in less than a sunny beach area will probably need you to choose 1/250s and allow Auto ISO to fall in place accordingly. "P" used in this situation will probably try and keep ISO low and result in shutter speeds of 1/60 or so with your kit zoom. I have seen on friends DSLR that their cameras will tend to select higher shutter speeds on "Auto" settings than m43 does. DSLR also seem to bias nearest subject for AF whereas m43 can easily get attracted to a contrasty background instead.

"You are a long time dead" -
Credit to whoever said that first and my wife for saying it to me. Make the best you can of every day!
