I've set the Direct Function so I can assign roles to the Arrow Pad buttons. I use the right-arrow to select the Drive.

The up-arrow defaults to Exposure Compensation but I wanted to ask why it behaves differently to holding the Exposure Compensation button and turning the rear dial. I use Auto ISO.

The former seems to adjust the Shutter Speed and ISO, it feels more like a Program Shift, whereas the latter only adjusts the ISO.

I'm trying to understand why the two Exposure Compensation options appear to do different things.

Thank you for your help.

You haven't had replies, I suspect because nobody else has this problem. You my want to repost with a step by step explanation of what you are doing.

It doesn't do different things on my OM-1.

When you adjust EC, does it actually change SS and ISO at the same time (with one click of the control dial and step in EC), or does it switch between SS and ISO as you adjust EC?

What are your settings for ISO-A Upper/Default, ISO-A Lowest S/S, ISO-Auto, and ISO Step?

What is your setting for EV Step

Can you give an example of what the focal length, SS, ISO, and EC settings are when you see both SS and ISO change? Please give a step by step list of those settings; at least three, as you change EC in both cases of using the EC button and using the Up arrow.

It definitely should not be adjusting both at the same time more than once. There is a case where they might both adjust at once if EV step is 1 and you are transitioning through the SS limit (or perhaps if EV step is greater than ISO step. But that should only be one time as you transition between SS changing and ISO changing.

Currently, in M with Auto ISO, if I hold the Exposure Compensation button and rotate the rear wheel the only setting that changes is the ISO. The image in the view finder gets brighter and darker. As expected.

With Direct Function f I press the Up Arrow (and Down Arrow) the Shutter speed changes, then the Left and Right Arrows become available to change the f number. All the while the Auto ISO changes to keep a valid exposure. So in essence, the Exposure Compensation Button on the Arrow Pad is not compensating as the Auto ISO also changes to keep the exposure per the cameras liking. It does not want me to take an under or over exposed image.

Is it expected that two buttons labelled 'Exposure Compensation' should behave differently.

Thank you for your help.

In M mode, the SS and Fn indicators are highlighted yellow with little control dial indicators above them indicating which control dial will change them. This can be changed in the menus and I usually have the front dial set to SS because I run through more values when changing exposure.

When you press the up arrow, the EC value should be highlighted yellow, and the SS and Fn indicators should turn white, and control dial icons above the SS and Fn indicators should disappear.

If you press and release it, then the EC value is no longer highlighted yellow, the SS and Fn indicators are highlighted yellow, icons above the SS and Fn indicators become up/down and left/right arrow heads, and both the arrows and control dials will adjust SS and Fn and not EC.

The difficulty is this: if you press the up arrow and then rotate a control dial, when you release the up arrow the display returns to normal with SS and Fn adjusted by control dials only. If you press and release the up arrow, the display is in the mode where SS and Fn will be adjusted by arrows. Pressing the up arrow without exiting this arrow control mode will result in changes to SS.

Try this. Hope this helps.

They are. They look green to me but then I am colour blind :-)

This is the Eureka moment! I was not holding the up arrow, I was using it as a press and release button. Assuming the up and down arrows were going to function as though I'd turned the wheel.

They do. This is what I was doing by mistake or at least not realising the difference.

It does help, yes.

Thank you very much for your patience.
