NX1 EVF issues

I have just started to play around with my NX1. I am waiting for my 15-50mm f2-2.8 lens to arrive tomorrow. I have been using an adapter and my Canon L lenses.

I have never used a mirrorless camera before. All the reviews I read talked about the great EVF on this camera. I have nothing to compare to, but it does not seem great to me. Can anyone tell me if the back LCD screen is pretty much the same quality as the EVF? When I pan back and forth the LCD looks great and the colors look pretty accurate. When I look through the EVF the image seems cooler (slightly blue), very contrasty and the screen lag seems terrible. When I pan back and forth looking at the EVF I almost get smeared results. I can see the stuttering of the refresh. I am not whip panning, just slow to medium pans. It does not seem like a super high refresh rate I have been hearing about. Completely different experience than using the LCD. Can anyone comment on that? I am thinking it could be defective.

Could the lens and adapter have anything to do with this? Thanks for any help on this...

To answer my own question...The EVF problem is not there when I attached my new 15-50mm. Using an adapter must some how change the EVF display. The frame rate looks great and smooth. There is still too much contrast in the EVF in my opinion and it seems a bit too bright. I am going to see if you can make any adjustments to it. I am not sure if LCD and EVF brightness and calibration are tied together or not??

I bought an $80 Fotodiox EF to NX adapter with iris control. I found out the aperture iris looks great and is smooth, but it is worthless. As soon as you stop it down 2 or 3 stops it starts to vignette badly. If you really stop it down you are just seeing a small circle image with a black vignette. Sent it back today.. Maybe others know this, but I thought I could use my Canon lenes and maybe not buy Samsung glass. In my opinion you almost have to have the Samsung glass to make this system functional for stills.

Does anyone know why I don't see my focus boxes when shooting video through the EVF? I am probably missing something, but i see no focus boxes at all. AF is working, but I have no idea what it is using, maybe just an area AF where the camera decides?



It is definitely a big change for a lifelong Canon shooter. I appreciate the help. Thanks.

When you are recording video or if you are in "Movie Standby" mode (one of the options for the Custom/Delete button), you should see some on-screen buttons on the left side that control AF. First, you can switch between autofocus or manual focus. Second, you can switch between SAF (single servo) or CAF (continuous servo). Third you can select the effect of touching the screen - either to Off, Touch AF (the camera will move the AF point to wherever you touch and will autofocus once in SAF or continuously in CAF), or Tracking AF where the camera will try to follow the subject that you touch. On the touch LCD screen I have no problems switching between the SAF and CAF, touch on/off...but if I want to shoot video looking through the EVF I don't see a way to control focus AF points. I was hoping I could use the dial to move the AF point around the frame, like I can while shooting stills. THe EVF was a big deal for me..no hoodman or other LCD contraption. The EVF will be great for bright days, but not as much if I am just relying on some mystery focus setting.

Are you using framing mode? That can create an artificial looking image in the EFV sometimes. Most times both the EFV and LCD look the same on my camera.

The EVF is pretty smooth most of the time, but will freeze momentarily when the camera is doing an operation and the camera moves (such as doing a half press on the shutter).

Remember, the EVF shows what the camera is seeing, not what you are seeing, it is basically live video. That means that you will see things like rolling shutter effects and so on.

Use the "AF-ON" button to lock focus, and the "Fn" button to toggle between CAF and SAF. The display will lock onto the LCD or EFV depending on which one is being used when you activate movie preview mode or start recording.
