I have imported many photos, thousands into Photoshop Elements. I recently had an issue when Elements told me I had 225 duplicate file names and couldn't import them. I changed the names and was able to but that was the first time I have had that issue. I have previously use several new cards and never had the issue before. I am not sure why i haven't had the issue previously as I now notice I had the camera set to "Reset" instead of "automatic" for the numbers. So, I guess my question is, if I set the camera to automatic will I have an issue with duplicates again? Will it start a new numbering sequence and therefore make duplicates or start numbering where it left off? Thanks for any help.

I have always used Auto and never had an issue with the naming. According to the manual when set to Reset, "Folder numbering is reset to 100 and file numbering to 0001 when a new card is inserted."

When set to Auto, "file numbering continues from the last number used when a new memory card is inserted."

Sadly I'm not sure. I use Lightroom but I do not use the catalog feature. I organize all my images into different folders base on trips, events, dates, etc. The only time I have a bunch of images in one folder is when I go out shooting wildlife for a day but I never had an issue with naming overlapping.

Are you not importing photos into a subfolder of some sort? For instance, in Lightroom I always have them imported into a new folder based on the date. For my individual cameras, I have them setup to have a unique prefix for each body. For instances, SBA, SBB, SBC, etc. So you'll see names like SBA00001.jpeg, etc.

As a rule, there will be files ending in 0001-9999 in a DCIM subfolder folder, and when you get to 9999 a new subfolder will be created, but the filenames within the subfolders will repeat (at least they do on my Sony RX10iv)

OMS offers the option to name the files AMDD####.

Where A is user selected, M is the month as 1-9,A,B,C; DD is day#

That means unless I'm going to take more than 9999 pictures on a single day, the filenames will be unique.

I only need to remember to change A once each year (or once each year for each camera) to make the filenames unique multiyear.

The only non-intuitive part of the numbering is that on a given day, the earlier pictures might be, numbered for example, xxxx-9999 followed later in the day by 0001-yyyy in a different subfolder.

I use "Auto" and my newest filename is P7178215 which means there are 7 digits.

I've had a hard day so I cannot math, but that suggests quite a wide range of potential numbers.

I suspect when you reset, and then import from a new batch of photos, there are duplicate numbers.

I split my imports by month, and there is precious little chance of my taking more than 9,999,999 images in the same month - so no overlap. Oh, wait, there we are - about 10 million seems to be the limit.

You're using the MDD file naming I cited in my prior post. 717 represents July 17.

Well, I do take a bunch. In three days of birding I took over 8,000 pics but that is a long ways from 10,000,000. Thanks!!

Hmmm, so would that mean I could run into a problem with how many different numbers it might save without a duplicate?

No. I never really learned how but looks like I need to!

No. Pictures you take today (July 21) would be P7218216 etc, so unless you take more than 9999 on a day you'll be safe.

Each January 1, change the first letter (P) to something else, and you'll be assured that you won't get overlap the following 7/21. Not likely to be an issue unless you, for example, go birding the same dates each year, but best to be safe.

Not sure how I change the P.

From Tools Menu#1 "Edit Filename" (tap OK)

For sRGB tap OK

Highlight MDD then tap OK. Select the prefix letter then exit.

Adobe RGB has no prefix letter option because the first character (of 8) is always _

Ok, looked at it and figured how to. Now, I am wondering if I might be smart to go ahead and change the P to an A or something else, since I have switched it to auto instead?

You should be ok until the end of each year. No need to change it at this point because with MDD selected each day's images will start with PMDD

It's hilarious to me that I've owned my OM-1 for over a year and didn't realize that the date is part of the file naming system. Or if I did know, I forgot!

I didn't either but there are a thousand more things I don't know about this camera!
