Hi,

I am set on getting the F100 and was wondering how different the software NR was from the NR bulit-in into some other DCs. Also is NR performed by some special software (not Photoshop etc) ? And if anyone has examples of the noisy night shots of the F100, or even the before/after NR that would be greatly appreciated.

I have the S404 - same sensor I think. Because I heard about the noisy Minoltas here on this forum I went out and bought Neatimage (availible at neatimage.com) to clean up my photos. I've used it about 5 times out of 1000 pictures. It does help with low light problems- but most of the daylight pics if tried it on turn a little too plastic looking. Basically- it was a good idea for dusk/night shots- but totally un-necessary for daylight shots with my camera- using it to clean out a few red pixels in blue skies was a waste of time- as by the time you reduce a picture for the web it doesn't show up anymore- and 99% of the noise doesn't show up in prints.

Good program- maybe more for the 5mp 7i crowd and if you're doing a lot of night photography.

I haven't tried it myself yet, but they all seem to work the same way. Neat Image is an excellent program too, the demo is worth checking out.

There's a lot of junk on that site right now- check image sizes before you try and open them-- there are full sized 4Mp images on that page- if you've got the bandwidth - go ahead.

Those are all S404 shots: pretty much the same sensor- but different lens.

Thanks. It looks like you can really do nice low light pics with a F100. Looks considerably better than my APS compact.

Nothing special, no tripod just went out to my pool and snaped a shot while leaning on the fence. Not a bulb exposure, but still a night scene nonetheless. Also this is a much scaled down and re-saved jpg, so the second time compression didn't leave the image as sharp as the original, but the original is on my other machine so you should look at the general scene not the absolute sharpness of the picture.

Nice shot, Stephen. It would appear the F100 does a nice job in these types of low-light situations. I have seen the same type of results in my experience.
