I am going to a wedding tomorow and was testing different lens combinations in the curch this afternoon durring the rehearsal and came upon a problem. I had my D70s set up using a Nikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash and a Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG lens. The exposure mode was set to P and when I zoomed in for a close up of the bride and groom to be at full 300mm the SB-600 would not go off. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance

Don't use Program mode. If the camera can not set the aperature to match the light with the flash filling it then the camera will not fire. I always always use shutter priority mode with a flash so I can pick the shutter speed. Otherwise you are likely to end up with 1/60 of second shutter speed.

I have the SB800 so it might be different.

OK, so I'm taking some test shots in my home in a relatively dark room, the same set up, zooming across the room to objects on the shelf. No flash again. I am shooting in S mode, shutter speed 125, 200, 250.

Use M mode, set the shutter speed to what you want and the aperture and the flash will fire and compensate for the settings that you use.

If it doesn't flash then, I'd return it/get a new one as its defective.

if you mean 1/1000 you have a problem.

The D70 only syncs at 1/500.

If you are indoors, what ISO are you using.???

Indoors manual setting on the camera is very effective.

What are you taking pictures of.???

If the subjects are people use:

ISO of 400
manual on camera 1/80 at 5.6 or 6.3
spot metering or center weighted, not matrix indoors
on the SB-800 use iTTL not TTL BL'
put the white plastic diffuser on for nice soft lighting.
