Feel free to augment\modify this list according to your impressions from the DPR review for the NEX 5.

Conclusion - Pros
  • Small, innovative designs that are still comfortable to hold
  • Decent Autofocus
  • High resolution sensor with excellent High ISO performance (in PASM modes)
  • Good JPEG output quality
  • Great build quality (particularly NEX-5)
  • Metal barrelled lenses feel impressive compared to peers
  • Tiltable high-resolution screen
  • Point-and-shoot interface that provides optional control of aperture
  • Interesting extra features such as in-camera HDR and sweep panorama
  • Good, clear live view magnification
  • High quality video mode
  • Built-in user guide (Shooting Tips)
  • The only compact interchangeable lens camera that offers a kit with a fast wide angle prime.
Conclusion - Cons
  • Tendency to overexpose (although 1 button exposure compensation is available in PASM modes)
  • Lack of function menu makes settings changes in PASM modes unnecessarily long-winded
  • Consumes battery very quickly if you use the screen a lot between shots
  • Slow startup and poor shot-to-shot times compared to a DSLR
  • 'Bkground Defocus' feature encourages the use of wrong settings
  • Very limited video control (no aperture control or exposure lock)
  • Screw-on flash awkward to attach
  • Live histogram unavailable when making exposure changes

look pretty good to me, maybe i would still take off the slow start and shot to shot all together but is ok i guess. 4/10th of a sec is a huge deal it seems, not sure why but it seems that way. even for those speed demon photographers that should be off-set though by the fact the larger, faster cam might not even be with you because it is too large.

we still need to work on the Good For and Not So Good For, do not like to keep seeing "Gadget lovers" as it also was for the a550.

Good For - People who want best in class APS image quality in the smallest APS body.

Not So Good For - People who need/want hot shoe, dedicated buttons, two dials, or excuses to leave their camera at home.

I would say

Good For: People who want best in class APS image quality in the smallest APS body, and are prepared to live with a sub-optimal UI. Perfect for aperture priority shooters who are content with mostly adjusting aperture and exposure compensation.

Not so good for: People who want to change lots of settings frequently. People who prefer an eye-level VF.

Lists are fine but why not just post some example photos instead or haven't you actually tried a NEX & have no photos ?

political answer - photos will not "soften" the review to being a bit more fair/balanced

It's nice to see that those here who are often accused by the more critical set as being 'fanboys' or even in the pay of Sony (I wish) can achieve such balanced objectivity.

If only others would realise that this is all we are looking for - not a whitewash but balance, fairness and something approaching objectivity.

Hopefully this post might move the debate on into an area more can find common ground.

Pretty arrogant trying to rewrite a review without actually having the camera in hand, basing it solely on impressions.

Well, I'll say it for once, as you use the word yourself: this is a fanboy's thread, with nothing to back it up. How is that fairer compared to a real one made by people handling it extensively for some time?

I've said it many times - I think the DPR review is great. The sheer mountain of information they provide is much appreciated.

I only disagree with the conclusions they arrive at, and the pros and cons they choose to focus on, at the end of the review.

In stead of just telling me; " how dare you disagree with DPR review!?!?! "

Why don't you rather point out where I was unreasonable in my version of the conclusions?

If you actually read what I wrote you'd find that I was being quite objective. A 'fanboyish' version would've been very different.

without having the camera.....hmmm where do you base your conclusion list on.

trying to start a fire again against the DPR opinion with smooth words ?

... childish.

buy the camera and come back after one month after having put the NEX thru its paces and bring a report based on real world tryout.

It's pretty clear you are again acting against their review, just by using the same layout. Alas, you don't have the camera in your hands, so nothing of what you write can be a valid assessment of the pros and cons, only wild guesses, preferences or your own wishlists. As long as that lasts, yes, this is just another fanboy's thread.

While doing so, you are inducing unknowing people coming here for the first time in search of some information, into confusion, it's a shame they let you go on with it really. Nothing against liking some piece of gear or not, but back it up with facts, please, from owing and using the equipment!

My conclusion list is based on the DPR review.
trying to start a fire again against the DPR opinion with smooth words ?
There already was a fire. I am not interested in making trouble, I am interested in open discussion.
... childish.
You are welcome to have that opinion.

I certainly will. In the meantime this is what i can\ would like to put on the table. I apologise if it agitates you and others.

Never mind the comments of the others. I think your list is a bit more fairer list than dpr reviews even though you have not touch the camera at all. For example listing that the cheapest kit is the one with the fixed focal lens which is not a good option for beginners is total nonsense. Giving consumers options is always good.

It's pretty clear you are again acting against their review,
Did you even go through my list and compare, or are you just reacting to the idea of someone disagreeing with DPR?

My conclusions are based on the facts presented by DPR. If you actually read what I wrote you'd find I was being very objective.

Please reference any points I made that could confuse\mislead people?
