I've just acquired a brand new G9 (not G9II) and I am finding my way around it after using the G85 for 6 years. So probably more queries in the pipeline! :)

One thing I don't like is that the playback button has been moved to the left-hand side. I find it awkward. All the buttons seem infinitely customisable, but I can't find an option to assign it to, say, Function 1? In some earlier models, perhaps P&S models, you could click up or down on the control wheel on the back of the camera to access "Review" mode.

The wheel on the G9 seems to only respond to turning, not clicking up/down/left/right ?

So I just have to get used to the playback button where it is?

I also dislike the review button being on the left side on the G9 so I’ve configured the left push of the rear control ring as my review button. Works well.

Go into menu, c spanner, operation, Fn Button Set. I’ve set FN 19 to the left of the control wheel as my review button.

Good luck

Hah, meanwhile, as an-ex Nikon user, the playback button is in the perfect spot.

The dpad is a combination dpad and rotary dial.

Yes that is ideal - it i also cancelled by a soft press of the shutter button which is slightly different from the dedicated playback button. The latter is press start, press again to stop.

This feature is also available on the G9II. It is very natural as one left button press and last image captured is replayed then the left/right buttons are used as in normal playback until cancelled by soft press as noted.

What seems a big issue is resolved in a typical Panasonic thoughtful manner.

I have the g85 and just added a G9 because I always wanted one. Even though I primarily shoot Olympus for m43.

I'm actually enjoying it more than my Olympus or RF gear. To the point where I'm going to take the g85 and the G9 to Scotland for 2 weeks instead of either of the other options I have.

I do find the positioning of the playback button very annoying. That's pobably the only criticism I really have of the g9. The focus tracking isn't quite as good as any of my em1s or Canon gear, but I don't shoot sports that often anymore so that's irrelevant to me, and it's good enough for the type of motion I do now. Also, I can't get the little rubber cover off to install the grip. I actually peeled the tiny tab off trying. And I cannot get the in camera battery charging to work with any cable I have, including the factory one that came with my gear. So I simply use the external charger and I bought a Wasabi that can be charged directly with a USB C cord.

I hope you're enjoying your g9 as much as I'm enjoying mine.
