Carol, I'd welcome your impressions of your new D1X if/when you get
around to it.
When I got home and opened up all the packaging, my initial thoughts were, "Oh Hell, What Have I Done????". All the buttons, switches, rockers - I thought I'd never get to grips with it.

Anyhow after sitting down with the manual and the camera on my lap for 4 hours, I started to feel a lot more confident - such that I decided to do the studio shoot this morning with the camera.

The image was shot in raw mode to give a NEF file which was processed in Bibble to give the 10.6 megapixel image. In Bibble I simply chose the standard sharpening which the camera would have applied and chose the white point. In Photoshop, I cropped the image to what you see blow which gives you a good idea of what the skin tones are like and the resolution.

Skin tones look really good to me. By what I can tell, the baby is
really cute! Show us the whole image.
I don't mean to sound rude, but if I wanted to discuss the Nikon D1X I would have gone
to the NIKON SLR forum. Let's keep the discussion to the topic.

What do you think about that?

Carol

That is exactly the kind of sample I wanted to see. How did you know? Amazing! How far away were you from the subject? What lens? The detail and tone looks quite good. What do you think?

One could argue that this topic should be relocated to the Canon rumour forum.

I was around 5-6 feet away, the full image shows the baby down to ½ length.

The lens was a 28-70 f2.8 Nikon AFS lens set at f6.3. Speed was ISO125 equivalent

Thank you, Carol.

So you're saying in the full image the baby takes up only half the frame vertically?

Well, that adorable baby picture would seem to indicate that the D1X would be quite handy in the studio. Thank you, Carol. I'll keep an eye on your web site too for new additions.

No, sorry, did it sound like that - the half the baby takes up the
full frame as in:-

Wow, Darren ,I love your attitude - "Don´t tell me about it,couse I can imagine it!"

I have also heard the 6MP CCD sensor rumor. Suposedly Canon had trouble with the CMOS chip at higher megapixels. And a friend of mine mentioned a rep told him to expect a 1.2x magnifcation placing the sensor in the 5 megapixel range. It's all rumors but I do know three things.

1. It will be awesome and set the standard. Nikon has already shown thier hand and Canon loves to trump them. (AF, FPS, IS Lenes)

2. It will cost more the D1x. ($7000 sounds about right, plus garbage fees for "personal function software" and specialty chargers to activate the infamous 9fps*.)

3. It will be announced, pushed back and shipped late. But I'm sure we'll see it before the superbowl.

3a. And I'll definately buy one.

In another thread, I said that Canon using a 6MP CCD sensor with
1.3x magnification (which I noted was very similar to the Kodak 760
sensor) didn't make a lot of sense to me, given their development
of the CMOS in the D30. You said it made commercial sense for
Canon to let Kodak (or whoever) do the legwork. In the short term,
I'd agree. But Canon is the 800 pound gorilla of photography,
larger (I believe) than any other photo company, and they like to
develop their own technology. Thus, the D30 CMOS, USM lenses,
image stabilization in lenses, DO lenses, eye controlled focus,
etc. From Canon's point of view, I thought it made more sense to
include their own sensor and be independent of another company's
ability to manufacture one.

But the bottom line is that all of this is still rumor until it's
announced by Canon. (I also respect Kai Pin's comments, but it's
stlll not Canon.) So we continue to wait, and wait, and wait ....
