What do you think about that?
Lev
I'm wondering why you're posting this in the Nikon forum??????

Could this be a ruse by Canon to prevent swaying D1x purchasers to hang on indefinitely until Canon finally come out with a pro version camera (probably sometime next year).

Makes you wonder.

Sorry Carol, this is the Pro Digital Forum, not the Nikon forum. Are we to assume that in your mind the Nikon is the only Pro level digital camera? Leave your biases at the gate.

By this time I was hoping B&H would stock one of your cameras and set their price. Have not seen it in stock on their web site anyway? What is the delay? At this rate they will be selling the D1X before yours. Go figure.

There is quite a bit of demand out there for the DCS 760. Much more than we have been able to fill. I would not expect dealers to have many "siittig on the shelves" for some time to come. If you are serious about getting one, you may want to get your order in.

You'd think a few of the posters here would have their's by now and be posting some samples. Does Phil have his?

Jay, I thing you are missing point. I ordered Kodak DCS 760 about two months ago and I suppose to received camera at the end of May. When I called dealer at the begging of June he told me that he ordered 50 cameras and received only 3 and mine will be in mid of June. Last week I called again and heard this same story but now I will receive camera at the end of month. Now tell me, what I suppose to do. Upon the information from Kodak dealer I sold my Nikon D1. Next month I am going for my private photo safari to Africa, probably without camera.

Thank you Kodak

I have some close contacts in the industry, and I already have mine on order. It will take a while, but I'm sure it's going to be worth the wait, and the extra expense.

erm...call me stupid, but how can you order something that does not offically exist?

Thanks for the feedback. They all sound wonderful and I'm sure I won't be able to afford them!

In 2001, Canon has or will upgrade their digital SLR, their 'A' series, their 'S' series, their digital Elph series, and the PowerShot series.

No word on the upgraded G1? I'm looking for a G2 that has a CMOS sensor, matrix metering to really take advantage of the EX flash capabilities, and a better grip. 4.6 MP resolution would be nice. (That's 1920x2400 for a full frame 8"x10" print at 240 ppi with no upsampling.)

Heck, a digital Rebel 2000 would be nice!
Actually, there are several prototypes of the camera being tested
by Canon, and to make sure their respective subsidiaries around the
world do not leak anything until the official announcement by Japan
sometime in October......

erm...call me stupid, but how can you order something that does not
offically exist?
Yes you actually can.

Canon Norway tells me that they have already sold 100 units of this camera that does not exist officially (at a price of 70000 kroner, about $7000) to "selected customers". I reckon this is includes the largest newspapers and photo agencies in norway and a very few trusted individuals.

but all those are forced to sign NDAs (non-disclosure agreement) which means that they who know aren't talking about the camera, because they know they will get theirs as soon as possible.

Well, I was at my tailor the other day getting my pants hemmed, and this self-important-sounding customer walked in, and he was bragging about how Bentley was in the process of designing a 2-door sports coupe to compete with Mercedes and Porsche and BMW, and he had been invited to check out the prototype, and he was telling the tailor that he put down an order for one. So I guess maybe people in the know can get special access. Or maybe that Canon rep did nothing more than jot in his notes, "So and so wants one of these when it comes out."

Well, following the Kodak business model, the motor cars would be hand crafted, one or two a month and they will never see the showroom floor because they are all ordered in advance. :o)

It's not that hard. In my case, I just called up my favorite dealer. I said "You know that new Canon Pro Digital camera--the one that doesn't exist yet and hasn't been announced and you don't know when it will be released or at what price?" "Yeah."

"Well if you have a list, put me on it. If you don't have a list then start one."

David,

I wouldn't call you stupid (yours is even one of the names I look for in a thread for a worthwhile comment), but as Al did, I contacted my local dealer and said put me on the list for when comes in, whenever that may be. And what a surprise, the dealer told me I'm first on the list! ;-)

In another thread, I said that Canon using a 6MP CCD sensor with 1.3x magnification (which I noted was very similar to the Kodak 760 sensor) didn't make a lot of sense to me, given their development of the CMOS in the D30. You said it made commercial sense for Canon to let Kodak (or whoever) do the legwork. In the short term, I'd agree. But Canon is the 800 pound gorilla of photography, larger (I believe) than any other photo company, and they like to develop their own technology. Thus, the D30 CMOS, USM lenses, image stabilization in lenses, DO lenses, eye controlled focus, etc. From Canon's point of view, I thought it made more sense to include their own sensor and be independent of another company's ability to manufacture one.

But the bottom line is that all of this is still rumor until it's announced by Canon. (I also respect Kai Pin's comments, but it's stlll not Canon.) So we continue to wait, and wait, and wait ....

lol...now that was funny!
Well, since I just said that I did the same thing as Al did, I'll assume I have your (sarcastic) heartfelt wishes, as well. It's nice to have a relationship with a dealer. (Mine might be optimistic -- he thinks the camera will be introduced this year.)

Sorry John, simple mistake, I had just done a pass through the messages of the Nikon forum and must have come back here.
Are we to assume that in your mind the Nikon is the only Pro level
digital camera? Leave your biases at the gate.
At the moment there are only 2 pro level cameras (in the 35mm camera format) - both have Nikon bodies.

That doesn't mean to say that other cameras cannot give pro quality images - but you did specifically state pro level digital cameras.

They already are Mike, I picked up mine today (in the UK), but I also know a couple of people in the States who picked up ytheir cameras yesterday and today.

Hi Carol,

Jay says some are picking up 760s too. I'm probably missing something but you'd never know it here. Anyway, urging someone to "order it before you see it" has the buzz of marketing swag hype. Then again, I guess to a pro -or maybe at least an "alpha pro"- if you have to see it, then you don't really need it and if you have to ask the price you can't really afford it. Well I can wait to decide. So I'm looking forward to some reviews and image posts as well as finding out what my favorite mailorder shop is going to charge.

Carol, I'd welcome your impressions of your new D1X if/when you get around to it.

Mike
