New DF, any good links to setting it up etc?

I used Manual mode auto Iso and just fire away!!!
Yup, me too... That way all the creative controls are a quick dial flick away.

From Kents explaination, I have the ISO set up the same way as he does... So the ISO dial indicates the MAX ISO available. It works brilliantly. If I'm using a tripod I just dial the MAX ISO down to 200. If things get dark I can quickly turn the max up to 6400 or 12800. I normally leave it on 3200 and I know any file I get from it will be detailed and clean.

And the EC dial works in this mode too (by adjusting the ISO up or down, as the shutter and aperture are set by me).

I have the command dial set to change aperture (for my lenses without aperture rings), so I don't have to use the slightly awkward sub-command dial at all...

And never a menu in sight.

It's perfect!

Hehe, that sounds like a fun setup! :D
I'm having a play with M vs A with Auto ISO as per Robert's description. I never would have worked that out....

I grew up with shooting A mode on an FE but the way Auto ISO works in M mode may convert me. It seems to give me more control or at least make me think more about the settings I'm using. Thanks Robert!
I always shot in Aperture priority with my XPro1 but the Auto ISO implementation in M mode on the Df makes it a joy to use with the direct dial control.

I never use the front sub command dial. I have switched this around as well and use the main command dial for apertures with the kit G lens. My other lenses have aperture dials.
so if you use the DF in manual you still set the aperture in the back and then the shutter on the big shutter dial and then let iso be manual?
There are a few permutations. With my AIS lenses I alter the shutter in 1/3rd stops on the rear wheel and aperture on the lens.

For example, I will set my shutter speed 1/500th of second (with the top dial) and leave it there. I will then set the aperture, for example at f8. With auto iso, the camera will automatically adjust the iso so that I get a proper exposure even if I move the camera. You can play with the shutter speed or apertures and the iso will adjust accordingly, except if you go beyond the auto iso range. An example of this would be if you were shooting outdoors on a bright day at f2 and you had set your shutter speed at for example 1/60th of a second, your auto iso will go down to base iso 100 and the small scale in the viewfinder will indicate that you are over exposing. You then need to increase your shutter speed or use a smaller aperture.

ah i get it:) very nice example and it made me understand it now.

I actually set 4 shooting banks like an hour ago. So i got one for portraits, one action, one nature/landscape/travel, and one for manual. All except the manual will be in A-priority and might switch between auto iso and not for those. And then in manual go for the auto iso because that sounds like a great option. I have it set to 200 as Kent suggested. I tried it out and it seems to work great.

Today i also got my first Su-800 unit. never worked with that but thought id get more things out of that now since i bought the DF. Now i can use it on the DF to help in darkness and with flashes, but also for my D700 to make life easier there and not have to use the pop up flash.

Im so excited now to test everything out. Today and yesterday i have been working, so have only been able to set stuff up and played with it a little. Just wanna go out in daytime and shoot! :D
