New 50D samples.

they sure know how to release as little as possible at a time.

Still yet to be seen is a native iso 3200.

i usually use sharpness 4 for in-cam jpgs on my 40D.
i normally use RAW though, way sharper, i'm so use to RAW it's hard to judge.
The butterfly bush ( assuming that's what it is ) is quite soft in
terms of sharpness but hitting it with a fairly large amount of smart
sharpen pulls out some detail. The ISO1600 shot has a lot of punch to
the color ( EXIF says normal settings for saturation and contrast )
and it can be cleaned up fairly easily.

Course the resolution on these shots is so high that even ISO 200
shots show the fine pixel grain when viewed at 100%. Could jsut be an
issue with our 72 dpi monitors viewing extremely small pixels.. I'll
let the experts discuss that.

On my 40D I shoot jpgs with sharpness set to 3 out of 7. I just
checked an EXIF of one of my jpgs and it reports"low" as well. My 40D
jpgs seem sharper on screen but it's too early to draw anything
meanigful just yet.
This ISO 1600 sample looks better than previous samples. Noise is
well controlled and detail is preserved despite the fact that shutter
speed is only a tad faster than the minimum desired for
handholdability and DoF is shallow at this close distance (not all
the jewelry is in focus, although some, such as the yellow-flowered
pin, seem to be sharp).

this one does give a bit more hope for optimism.

i'm curious how it would act in my hands where i set everything equal between my cameras and have same lighting etc. ISO1600 can look terrible to almost eprfect on my 40D depending upon condiitions.
than on the 40D...especially for it's huge size !! and will make
very good 8x12 prints. The 3200...good, but not great. Will make
good/acceptable 8x12's and very good 5x7's at least, if not more.
We will see what raw and PP can do ...probably improve on my numbers
here for now. OK, that's just my opinion. I'm sure you have your
own...:)

Depends on what Im shooting and for what purpose.. taking shots of my collies running in my backyard are always jpgs.. will shoot 400-500 shots at a time and no desire to PP via RAW as most are simply playing. I think the 40D does pretty well with jpgs for outside shots especially.. if the Wb does get messed up ACr does pretty good even with a jpg. Course other types of shots deserve RAW treatment. Nice thing about Canon in recent times is you can easily do both. Perhaps the 50D's default setting and the 40D's are NOT the same.. could be the 50D is 1 or 2 settings lower but no way to know until those with 50D's test!

unless Canon overnighted them a proper production model to use.
