I recently purchased the Sigma 100-400mm f5-6.3mm DG OS HSM lens SA mount with caps. I was in a rush and saw SA mount but didn't understand fully what SA mount was. I was searching for my Canon 80D which is an aps-c sensor that can use for EF or EF-s mount. (You have to understand all the other life stressors I am going through to account for the brain fart and why I though the SA mount was the ring that connects the camera lens to the tripod)

Anyways I paid around 400 dollars for this lense and it looks perfect and I am stuck with it. I didn't want a new camera body and didn't know Sigma made bodies. I was looking at the Merrill or Quattro if I am stuck with this lens or the other option is where can I sell it? Will Sigma trade me the correct lens for my Canon 80d?? Please straight forward answers that help no judgemental smart condescending mess i am very sensitive right now. A lot is going on. Please.

Hi, if you bought this lens used, there are very little chances you could ask Sigma for an EF equivalent.

I know they have a service to change the lens mount on some lenses but I don't know if this lens in particular (or used lenses in general) is supported.

As for the Sigma cameras that would be compatible, it really depends on what you want to do with that lens. If you bought it for stuff like wildlife or action, you're SOL, the Sigma cameras you mentions (the SD1 Merrill and the sd Quattro (H)) are not cameras suitable for that kind of photography. Their image processing is too slow for bursts, and the autofocus (especially on the Quattro) is not going to work very well for moving subjects.

Only way you would be able to use that lens on a non-SA camera would be to get the Sigma MC-21 adapter to port it to an L mount camera, or Sigma MC-11 to port it to a Sony E mount camera.

Hope this helps.

Conversion from SA to Canon EF mount would be $200 + Shipping and applicable taxes.

To start the process, please go to www.sigmaphoto.com/repairs and fill out the Online Repair Form. Click ‘Submit’ on the bottom and follow the instructions on how to send it to us. The evaluation is free of charge; you just pay shipping to us.

Honestly. Sell it back on eBay and chalk it up as a life learning lesson.

You DON'T want to go and buy a Sigma SD1, etc just to use the lens. Especially because Sigma bodies aren't really made for action compared to Canon/Nikon.

+1 to that. Getting it converted sounds OK.

The advantage to conversion is that you would have effectively a brand new lens once they’re done. Is $600 good for one of these in Canon mount?

As others said, you can:
  • convert the mount (will cost extra and take rather long time)
  • just sell it
I would just sell it.

LOL

Thank you for the laugh. This is truly hilarious!

:-D

If I were you I would sell it on eBay or the For Sale and Wanted Forum here on DPreview.

E-bay will cost you some money, but hey, that's how it goes on there. You're unlikely to find someone who wants a lens for a Sigma camera on Craigslist (though I did find my first Sigma camera on Craigslist, using a website that let me brows all of Craigslist, nationwide).

If you'd like to try a Sigma camera, I would try the SD Quattro. They're pricey though (about what they used to cost when brand new), because they hold their value very well, unlike Leicas and all other digital cameras that I know of. That is because they have a unique sensor, called a Foveon sensor, which allows Sigma cameras to capture amazing images at low ISO settings (but terrible images at high ISO settings).

Another thing you might consider is using that SA mount lens on a Sony camera, using Sigma's SA to E mount adapter. Sony makes some great cameras, and that is a full-frame lens, so you can use it on any Sony E mount camera. Sigma makes an adapter for L mount too, so you could use it on any L mount camera, such as a Pansonic S1 or S1R or a Leica that has an L mount . . . or one of Sigma's L mount cameras (but Sigma only makes tiny full-frame L mount cameras, which are a bit unusual).

Good luck!
