I'm a current Pentax gear owner. I have a K-3II body with a DA*16-50mm & a DA* 60-250mm lens. It's very rugged & wonderful when it comes to shooting outdoors.

The one thing that my K-3II can't seem to do well is autofocus on moving subjects. I have to use the center point & recompose, since the rest of the AF points are just about useless. The AF.C feature is useless on this camera. Whenever I try to shoot people, I get about a 50/50 hit ratio if they're moving around.

I'd like to get another camera system to get better people pictures. I might end up selling my Pentax gear to fund this new camera purchase.

Possible cameras that I'm considering:
  • Sony a7IV (it's not out yet)
  • Nikon Z6II
  • Panasonic G9
  • Olympus OM-D E-M1 III
They all have their pluses & minuses.

Sony has very good AF, but their ergonomics don't seem to be that great.

Nikon has wonderful ergonomics, but their AF is not as reliable as Sony's.

Panasonic has a ton of features, but it has a smaller sensor & Panasonic's digital camera division has an unknown future too.

Olympus has very good IBIS, but it also has a smaller sensor & Olympus, or shall I say OMD, is currently restructuring.

There's nothing else that I'm interested in. Canon is too expensive. The L-mount alliance is expensive as well. Fujifilm doesn't attract me, nor does the Sony APS-C E-mount system. I'm not interested in any DSLR's from Canon or Nikon. The recent Pentax K-3III has subject recognition, but from all the reading & YouTube watching that I have done so far, it doesn't look too convincing for me. The $2,000 price tag is also very hefty for an APS-C body, but I do know that a lot of research & development went into it, hence the cost. I do like my K-3II, but I wish it had more reliable autofocus.

What do I shoot? A lot of candid people shots, kids running around, pets running around, motorsports, sporting events, aerospace, landscapes, low light nightscapes, astrophotography, & things like that. I don't do birds in flight type stuff, although once in a while I will shoot birds, but it's not really my thing.

I can deal with each camera's weaknesses & restrictions. The Sony & Nikon are FF, which will end up costing a bit more & will be slightly heavier. The Panasonic & Olympus are m43, so I know that I'm giving up some high ISO performance with those 2 cameras, but they look usable to ISO 12800 for me. I'm just trying to figure out what will end up working for me the most.

I guess my main want is really good subject recognition for people, especially when they're moving around. This is where Sony excels, but the other 3 are not that far behind. The Panasonic G9 will be getting a firmware update that will be able to recognize people even better. I know it uses a contrast based DFD system, but it seems to be quite competent at keeping people in focus.

I'm just trying to figure out what to get. Have any recommendations? Thanks!

The K3III is supposed to have the best AF of any Pentax camera. If I were you I would probably get that.

From the cameras that you are considering, you are only looking at mirrorless. Is there a reason for that? Personally I love DSLRs and the Nikon D850 is the best full-frame camera that I've ever had. The focus is lightning fast, the resolution is great, the ergonomics are fantastic, the colors are perfect, and it is tough and weather sealed like a Pentax. What else can you ask for? The only downside is that it is heavy.

Failing that I would go with the Z7II because I need all the resolution that I can get. But like you said, it doesn't have the Sony AF. But again the Sony doesn't compare to the D850...

I have a Sony A7RIV and I like it, but again, it is no D850.
