Need Help with Raw Therapee processing

Using Default Profile

Select a CR2 (RAW) image file, Make all desired adjustments

Save (settings) Current Processing Profile to Clipboard -- Select Everything -- OK

In File Browser, select files (images) that can use same Profile (adjustments)

Right click -- Processing profile Operations -- Paste

(to Paste Profile from Clipboard to the selected images)

Right click -- Put in Queue (to add selected Images to Queue)

The 3 applicable images are now in Queue

The following are settings for File Format:

Tiff (8 Bit) (used for Testing and self training to be faster than (16 Bit)

Checked -- Uncompressed TIFF

Checked -- Save processing Parameters with Image

Click -- Start processing ( for the 3 images)

Checked the Output Folder and the above steps did NOT result in creating a TIF file for any of the three images along or a .PP3 file for each.

If there is anyone familiar with Raw Therapee, I need help with the above.

I have used 4 or 5 test images (individually), entered the various desired settings; and (using the SAVE Current Image - at bottom left) and this saves the TIF file along with the .PP3 file for the TIF file in the designated output Folder. This functions properly for both 8 bit and 16 bit TIF files.

You don't say what template you have set for the output directory. Selecting the "Save current Image" button allows you to select where to save the image. The queue requires that you code the directory where you want the files to go. Make sure you are using the correct code as shown below.

Thanks for your reply. During my series of testing and trying to learn the software, I am saving the processed TIF files in the same folder as the source CR2 (Raw) files.

Below is a list of all files being tested for this one Folder. The (2984) CR2 file for one output TIF file was individually processed and saved. Also, I saved the Profile (adjustments) for that image to the clip board and pasted to the rest of the images just for testing -- even though in normal practice, there are some that would not be applicable for using the copied/pasted profile.

Doesn't look like the Queue dialog in Raw Therapee 4.1.80. I am using Windows 7 with the latest Windows Development version. Try using the template %p1/%f in the Queue Output Directory "Use Template" box. Maybe I have misunderstood, or you are using a completely different version of Raw Therapee or UI theme. Something is different. %p1/%f works for me.

Your last screen shot is the correct screen for processing images in the Queue, makes no difference how many you put in the Queue. Preferences is set to Multiple Editors Tabs Mode. That makes no difference to whether you are processing one or one hundred, simply allows for more than one editor window to be open at the same time. In multiple editors tabs mode you can open an image in the editor window, click on the browser tab, double click another image, have another editor window open with the new image and have a second editor tab at the top, or several at the same time.

The word "converted" in the code will create a new folder named converted within the original folder and place the processed images within it. Taking out the word converted and typing in or leaving just %p1/%f will place the processed images in the same folder as the original files. The Queue is the Queue no matter how many images you put there for converting.

There is a button at the bottom of the editor window for immediately processing individual images right next to the button to place in the Queue. Clicking on place the image in the Queue will allow you to continue to edit other images immediately and not wait for the current image to process. Set the Queue to start automatically, check Auto Start, and then just keep editing and adding to the Queue without ever stopping for an image to process. Just keep adding to the Queue until all done.

Below is a screen shot with 5 NEFs in the Queue. It is not just for single image conversion but for 1 to hundred(s), however many you need, hence the name "Queue", in a line waiting to process each in its turn. Put all the images from the folder in the Queue and go get a cup of coffee, they will process once you click start or set to auto start.

You can check the lower save to folder box and enter the correct folder but it is easier to simply use the code for same folder as it will not be necessary to change it each time you process a different folder of images.

Casey, again I appreciate your help. This seems to be a rather normal (and simple) method of processing Multiple images especially when many in a specific folder can use the same adjustments. I have been using the Canon software DPP for processing and creating my "partially adjusted" TIF files (either 8 bit or 16 bit, as desired). The DPP software is somewhat limited with the minimum types of adjustments that may be used -- and that is the primary reason I am trying to test with Raw Therapee software for potential normal use. The single Test images that were created look very good and I have printed several for tests and the printed Photos are good.

The only condition (when using the Queue) for which TIF images and associated pp3 files are created (saved) for me is discussed below. I just now completed testing for both conditions just to make certain I had not "Goofed" with my previous tests.

When processing single images, entering the Image into the Queue can be by either using the Ctrl+s "Save Current Image and click to put to the end of the Queue (or to the beginning of the Queue) and click OK --OR-- Ctrl+b put current image to process Queue.

When using Ctrl+s "Save Current Image -- it DOES save a TIF processed file plus the pp3 file for the TIF.

When using Ctrl+b put current image to process Queue -- it DOES NOT save a TIF processed file or a pp3 file.

I have no idea why when using the Ctrl+b option and image is placed in the Process Queue, then click to Start processing, there is never a TIF file created and no pp3 file for a TIF file. It goes through what appears to be the normal processing steps and amount of time seems normal but does not output TIF file or the pp3 file for a TIF.

I first noticed this when trying to process Multiple images at a time for which of course used the Queue and did not create and save files -- but after further checking (and testing) I find the above described conditions regarding when using Ctrl+b option, also no files are created and saved.

Below is my method which works for multiple images.

Casey, thanks for the details and screen shots. I followed your exact steps as illustrated three different times and unfortunately none of these created the applicable TIF and pp3 files. Two times was using 5 selected images that had been previously used (normal CR2 files) for testing. Then, I copied 4 (never processed) additional new CR2 files to the test folder and processed the four with same results.

The primary difference in your illustration as compared to my original post with details is that I copied the settings to the Clipboard and pasted from Clipboard to the group of selected images and you did not use the Clipboard.

This has me wondering what could be the issue. All the other functions I have used in Raw Therapee appear to function normally -- but the issue I am having with processing groups of images makes me wonder if there is something wrong with my installed version.

This appears to me to be such a "normal type function" that should work correctly.

In your opinion, should I download any later version and install -- or remove and re-install this version 4.1.74 -- or -- any other suggestions.

The instructions for sending multiple images to the Queue may not be explicit enough. In order to get the Ctrl+(Capital)B it requires Ctrl+Shift+B. Did you use Ctrl+Shift+B to send the multiple images to the Queue?

If this fails then uninstall 4.1.74 and install the latest development version for 64bit MS which is 4.1.80.

I finished the Uninstall, DL, Install and completed the various tests and unfortunately the results are exactly the same. I don't know what is wrong. It may be Me or something in my System but I have no idea what.

I also have XP Pro 32 bit installed on this computer (using a separate drive) that I have used for a few years -- so I will check for the latest 32 bit version of Raw Therapee and install in XP and see if it gets different results. I have been using Win 7 Pro for around 7 months and have had very limited issues with it with all my software.

After returning from taking my Wife for Her Doctor appointment:

I Down Loaded, Installed, and tested the 32 bit (XP) version 4.1.64. All of the functions regarding processing single and Multiple images worked perfectly when defining the Output Directory as well as when using the symbolic items for saving in the source Folder as well as saving in a Converted Folder within the source folder. This all worked correct.

I then booted into Win 7 Pro 64 bit and started (again) to try to find what was causing the failure to save the TIF files (when processing Multiple images). Using the same (original) defined folder as used for the original CR2 files, it continued to fail to save TIF files.

I then changed to use the option to save in a Converted Folder within the source Folder and this worked correct and saved the TIF files as well as the pp3 files for the TIF's. Then, changed to remove the Converted part of the option so to save directly in the source Folder -- and this also worked correct.

I then changed to select the source Folder (of the original CR2 files) using the "Save to Folder" ^ options -- selected Drive G, then selected the folder 00_Moth Day TEST 02_RT and run the same test using the same group of images to be processed in the Queue -- and this worked correct.

I can only ASSUME the original Folder selection had become corrupted since when viewing the "Save to Folder" it is exactly the same as when having the difficulties of not saving the TIF and pp3 files. Also, perhaps the changes to use the other "symbolic method" of specifying the Save to Folder -- then changing back to the Folder selection process has corrected whatever was originally the issue.

Anyway, thankfully it NOW works properly -- and I greatly appreciate all the work and time you devoted in helping me to get this resolved......

Casey, I want to thank you again for your help. Evidently, there must not be many users that frequent this Forum using Raw Therapee -- or perhaps more than I am assuming.

I have completed additional testing and so far I am impressed with the versatility and results of this software with the final TIF images. I will use for actual production until I get better knowledge of all the features to know if I want to change to use this on a permanent basis.

You are quite welcome. Raw Therapee is a very versatile and powerful photo editor. Takes a while to even start to begin to understand all the options and tools. I still have a long way to go to fully utilize it. Just one of the RAW editors that I use as I have yet to find one that is perfect for all images. One will do better on some images than another, then worse on other images. Photo Ninja is my normal RAW editor because of speed and ease of use. I usually use Raw Therapee on high ISO images as RT can achieve the almost perfect balance between noise and detail with out the noise reduction artifacts or overly smooth areas of other software. I especially like the Black & White film simulation cluts in Raw Therapee so I use it exclusively when converting images to B&W.

I suspect there are many other users here that just haven't chimed in.

One will do better on some images than another, then worse on other images. Photo Ninja is my normal RAW editor because of speed and ease of use. I usually use Raw Therapee on high ISO images as RT can achieve the almost perfect balance between noise and detail with out the noise reduction artifacts or overly smooth areas of other software. I especially like the Black & White film simulation cluts in Raw Therapee so I use it exclusively when converting images to B&W.

I suspect there are many other users here that just haven't chimed in.

Your comments regarding Photo Ninja is interesting since a few weeks ago I finished (over a period of a couple weeks) testing several images using the Trial period. I was VERY impressed with the results but found that my present main computer (being around 7 years since assembled) using 4GB ram and the Intel E6850 processor was too slow for response time for normal "individual" adjustments even when booted to Win 7 Pro 64bit. XP delays would probably have been worse but I am in process of Phasing out XP so did not test using it.

So, I had to by-pass Photo Ninja due to my Computer speed limitations and I am not ready to upgrade to a "current speed" computer. I normally don't use the higher ISO settings but occasionally use as high as 800 using my older Canon Models 20D, 50D, and IDS MKII. I really liked the processed images especially for the ISO 800 images. I realize current Digital SLR cameras have better quality at much higher ISO exposures.

I don't mind the Processing of batched (groups) of images being slower than desired since I can be doing something during that time but can't accept delays during the individual adjustment sessions..

In fact, Raw Therapee response time for normal "individual" adjustments has no (noticeable) delays on this computer, however; the Processing of batched (groups) of images is rather slow but I can allow and accept that. My tests indicate processing with 8 bit TIF output (I normally use 16 bit) uses close to 30 seconds per image. A few of my images used the Gradient Filter and those were the slowest -- but not much over 30 seconds.

Photo Ninja speed seems to depend on whether it is using the CPU or a high speed graphics card. From the sound of my GPU cooling fan cranking up I assume the processing is being handled by the graphics card. Instantaneous individual responses and 2 or 3 seconds to convert to 16bit tifs. I do have an Intel i7 quad core with hyper-threading which may help, either way Photo Ninja is much faster than Raw therapee on my computer. Probably due to coding to take advantage of the GPU and/or multiple cores in the CPU.
