The only way I can take properly exposed photos in low light condition (indoor) with the 50D and the 430ex flash is with the camera in the P or green mode.

In all the other Creative zone modes, the photos are out of focus and completely underexposed as the speed is way to low.

In the P mode the speed is always at 1/60 and I would like it to be faster. How can I increase the speed above 1/60 in this mode?

You can't.

Have you read the instruction books for both the flash and the camera?

If not, please do. If you have, please tell us what parts you do not understand, and we'll help.

It is highly unlikely either the camera or flash is broken, so it is probably user error,a nd fixable.

Tell us distances, apertures, ISO settings, how the flash is aimed, etc.

Check C.FnI 7: exposure, and change flash sync speed in AV mode to "1/250 fixed".

Of course you also need to select Av.

Kind regards

Try using M mode. You can set your shutter speed to up to 1/250s (or higher if you use high speed synchro) aperture as you wish and say ISO400. The flash will do the rest.

Use Mode.

Set your Fstop for the DOF you want, then use ISO100-400 (100=more battery power/flash, 400=less battery power/flash), set your shutter to 1/150-250 and fire away.

If you wish to blend in existing light with the flash, use the ISO and shutter speed to meter up existing light to 1stop under exposed.

Yes you can. With more ambient light.

P mode with flash selects a shutter speed between 1/60 and 1/x (sync). Thing is that we usually use flash in low light, so it tries to maximize exposure by using a slower speed. But it will only go up to 1/60 to avoid camera shake. So most of the times you will end up with 1/60
