all of my images from my A77 until 29th May have been named DSCxxxx.jpg (latest was DSC00017.jpg but suddenly since 12th June an underscore has been added ie _DSCxxxx.jpg? Why and how can I get rid of it?

Change your color space from AdobeRGB to sRGB: The underscore character comes from the "Design rule for Camera File system".

Unless your monitor/printer/etc (and anyone else's) is set up for AdobeRGB, there's not much point in using it. You'll never see that "wide range of color reproduction."

wow, would have never found that! I recently did switch to AdobeRGB after reading a book (Sony SLT-A77 by David Taylor) as I do not mind processing pictures in Photoshop but the change in file name was not mentioned. Didn't find anything via Google, knew I could depend on Dpreview :).
