Moon shots with HS20 both 16MP and 8MP

Soweee bout that Alex! :( You have a degree in Oceanology or similar right? I just remember you recognized Mt. Tam in one of my winning shots. LOL ;)

But do have a great trip when you do come here!

Kindest regards, Gary N W SFO
Thanks, Gary! Im actually in Nassau County, NY, right by the ocean (close to your rockaway pics!) but will be in Marin County for the summer :)

Thank you for that.

I did the same type of thing with my Panasonic FZ150 - I wondered if I'd done something wrong with the setup (a little smeared and lacking in definition).

But - my images are a lot clearer and sharper than these, so now i'm happy with my FZ150 again.

(and, please believe me, I mean no disrespect to you or your images with that comment - and it's not a challenge or flame attack)

(I truly do thank you for posting these and clearing my and over the quality of images)
Im posting the best here. These were all taken between 6:30 and 7 AM this morning, and it was brutally cold so I shot them through a closed window, with my hands propped up on my desk

Thanks, I should also mention I had both NR and Sharpening set to Low, and those were straight out of the camera, so are probably in need of some PP lol.

Do you think the hs30 will be better?
I think it will be better for four reason:
1. Much better EVF, the thing I miss most in HS20.
2. Faster processing (write speeds, faser AF)
3. Better pop-up flash
4. Better video recording (with manual focusing).

For now, of course, it's only on paper and it remains to be seen if it's really that much better.

The only downside (of HS30) for me is the dedicated battery (600 shot per charge they say), while I get over 1000 shot (up to 1400) on one set of Eneloops.

Other improvements/new features like 3D shooting, are a nice touch but not that appealing to me.

I wonder how it'll compare to the Nikon P510 with it's 42x zoom?

But now RAW support..

1, 2, 3 are good to see. #4 means zero to me, I don't use video on stills cameras.

I hope the faster AF might also mean faster FPS.. maybe.

Well, for me this Nikon looks like any other bridge, but with more zoom. Zoom is fun.. the more zoom, the more fun. But sadly, the reach of the zoom rarely goes along with the IQ (and 30x zoom is quite enough for me now). But the thing is, I fell in love with manual controls and manual zoom, and in this aspect it will be no match for HS 20/30. I don't think I'll ever go for electronic zoom.

Plus, the reported battery life of P510 is extremely poor (200 shots per charge). In comparison to HS30's 600 shots, or HS20's over 1000 shots, this looks really bad.
But we'll see.. maybe it will surprise us ;)

I need to use RAW on this camera to see if I can up the amount of resolved detail. I also use CCD cams (astro cameras) and they get the same sort of detail as this with OOC Jpeg, but once I switched over to a lossless format (be it TIFF, BMP or RAW), a huge amount of detail became visible. I'm still researching which RAW converter is best for this camera.

I wish these modern digital cameras supported TIFF or BMP, with the write speeds we have now, surely it couldnt take any longer to write an image file in one of those formats than the amount of time it takes to write a RAW.

Martin, at least the Fuji has a lens thread, and a common size at that, 58mm. So there should be some quality teleconverters available to add more reach. I just wish that Sony TC that everyone raves about was still around.

BTW, the reason I posted 16M and 8M pics was for people to compare them and see how much more detail was resolved with 16M resolution. I think it's enough to warrant usage of that mode in bright light situations where contrast isnt going to be a issue.

Martin, in your excellent moon pictures, did you spot meter or did you go full manual? Im going to try to see the originals again today and see if Dpreview will let me lol.

BTW what was that planet that was visible in the western sky around 7 PM last night? It was very bright and I took some pictures of it, but it just looks like a featureless disk.

Martin,... did you spot meter or did you go full manual?
Yep, I used manual, and anytime I shoot something still, that I know will not runaway before I take the picture I use manual mode ;)
