I posted this earlier in a more subtle format but most seem just to want to keep on complaining so I've reposted it this way.

It will probably just scroll off the front page since it's not bad news.

This is based on my mad science test of last week.

Eric Hyman of Bibble got my NEF's and ran them through a development
version of Bibble with good results

Large samples linked here.

it seems that it fixes the stuff nearly completely. That is good news!

It also seems that it makes the colours a bit more dull ? or greyish?

does this Bibble have a homepage somewhere??

Shadco

I have never tried bibble. Is this your primary software to handle NEF data?

Can I get away with using bibble + PS? I tried Capture, even though I like it, it is a bit too slow.

What would be your suggestions?

He didn't do any color processing in Bibble just ran it through to see if the artifacts got better.

I've never used it.

I find capture to be fast on my system.

I'm going to try it when it's released but what this is more than anything else is an indication that using a different raw processing algorythm reduces if not eliminates the artifacting.

I have used the moire reduction feature in Capture 4.1, with some success. Will be interesting to compare the results with processing with Bibble once available.

Thanks for the heads up.

The moire reduction tool doesn't touch the underlying artifacts.

The moire isn't much of a problem and without the artifacts I don't think it would show nearly as often.

Sample of artifacts

Thanks for the heads up.

The moire reduction in NC4.1 can be useless for some moire. Nikon needs to work harder on this. IMHO...
Thanks for the heads up.

Nikon D70, N6006 & FM bodies; Nikkor 18-70/3.5-4.5G AFS, 50/1.4 AF, 80-200/2.8D AF, 35-80D AF, Tokina 20-35 AF

Thanks so the update! But there are color shifts in the corrected photo.

This is actually one thing I worried. Some moire reduction procedures (never tried Bibble as it's not out) create color shifts, reduce color saturation, or even "bleed" colors to adjacent pixels. I hope Bibble can avoid all these. But just in your samples I can see slight color shift.

Overall though, this seems to be the most effective moire reduction program for D70 now.

There was no attempt to get the colors right jsut to see if the artifacts went away.

Without the artifacts there wasn't any moire to reduce.

I have never tried bibble. Is this your primary software to handle
NEF data?

Can I get away with using bibble + PS? I tried Capture, even
though I like it, it is a bit too slow.

What would be your suggestions?

I have just acquired a D70 and am proctising the art of using my first dslr. Also my first try with Nikon lenses (I used to be an OM4 owner for many years - manual only). Reading these threads is very informative. On MacBibble, he is very responsive and is working on an upgrade for the D70 which should be ready in "the next couple of weeks". His original Biible was produced in repsonse to the very poor reputation Nikon Capture had in its early days and has now become a well known RAW application.

I'm about to upgrade, so would really appreciate some pointers about this. Would hate to upgrade and still have slow conversion for Capture.

Thanks.

An Asus motherboard with a P4 processor overclocked to 3.5 Ghz, a bunch of really fast drives, and 2GB of ram.

Here's what it looked like before I finished it.

I have been out of the loop for a long time now. Still running my early gen Celeron overclocked to 400MHz for most home uses. :-) Any tips on overclocking? Which combo of processor and mobo is best for this? I was going to just get a 2.6 or 2.8GHz Dell machine since I have a $250 certificate from my credit card, but I wonder if I can get just the right Dell machine for overclocking. Did you need to add a special cpu heatsink/fan for that? What about the memory used?

Thanks.
