I have always noticed while looking around on Photo.net and on Photosig.com that there seems to be tons of people doing photo shoots with models. I've always wondered the following questions....

1) What is the purpose of these shoots? Are most of them class assignments? Are they just for fun? Are they for professional use?

2) Do these models pay the photographers to take the pictures of them for their modeling porfolios or do the models get paid by the photographers?

3) To those of you who have done shoots with models before, what were the circumstances of your shoots?

I've just always been curious as to why there are so many model photos out there and how they came about. Any responses will be appreciated.

Thanks,
-Ritchie

Hello Ritchie,

I'll give you the answers from my experience. I do this type of photography for a hobby, and bought/use my DReb only for this kind of photos.

SO...

1) for me, they are just for fun. Occasionally (and more frequently) I have girls that ask me to do a photoshoot for them, just because they want nice pictures of themselves, or because they want a portfolio to go to a modelling agency. But most of the time, I just try to create something beautiful, that makes me feel like I've made the most out of the girl that stands in front of my camera. If you look at the picture at the bottom of this post, I hope you'll understand what I mean.

2) depends. If the girl has exceptional features (smooth face and skin, nice curves, etc etc) I do a TFP (time for pictures). They pose, and they get some photos as a reward. If the girl comes to me and wants to do something she wants, without me having too much to say, I let them pay (it's not much though).

3) I shoot them in the living room of my parents home when they are on holiday. Don't have anything better to do it. I move all the furniture, drape the cupboards, get some lights and do the shoot.

A lot of work, but well worth it for me.

If I can come up with something like this, my day is a success, and I feel very happy:

Nice pic but I'm not sure it's kosher around here. I'd suggest you re-read the posting rules.

"Glamour / Nude / Bikini pictures - Please do not embed such images in your messages, while we understand that such pictures (tastefully shot) are a big part of commercial photography we do have a worldwide audience and wide range of paying advertisers."

Just a note with your nice photo of this model. Did you process this or did you purposally soften. It seems to me that the models face is too soft. It very well may be this is what you wanted, its just a bit distracting. Jim

Oh right, the posting rules.

Well, it's not really glamour, certainly not nude, and she's not wearing a bikini (it's lingerie :-). While I do understand that there need to be rules, I don't really feel like I'm violating it. The picture is too timid (?) for that. Maybe I'm wrong and I am violating the rules. In that case, call me a Rebel ;-)

Best regards,

Andy

There was some processing, but not on the face, only around the feathers on the floor. Softness might be due to incorrect downscaling. I'll check this out. Thanks for pointing this out.

Very nice! Love the background by the way. What is it?

I use bedcovers, but to get out all the wrinkles I need to overexpose them, which results in additional light in the lens, sometimes washing out colors.

Lovely models by the way. Just admit it, we have the best hobby in the world :-)

Just a small tip (don't say you didn't do it, it's just something you should never forget): the result is often relative to the amount of work/preparation you put into it. So you should know in advance what you want to create, and work towards it. I know it's something I still need to do a lot more...

Good luck and best regards,

Andy

P.S. Do you (or anyone else for that matter) know of a place where this type of images can be discusssed?

I can't keep noticing how difficult it is to do it here or on photo.net where sites are overwhelmed with pictures of landscapes and "character portraiture", mostly showing wrinkled old people. Nothing against it, just looking for a place to discuss our kind of work.

Thanks Ritchie.
And yes, I have an online gallery. It's at http://www.scherpenberg.be
Mind you, the shoot with this model isn't online yet, it was just
shot this weekend. :-)

Best to all,

Andy

I can tell you that I've seen tamer stuff than this considered glamour here.
By the way nice picture, I thought it was a little soft as well.

According to the rules it's OK to put links to the picture, just not to embed the image. It's also pretty standard to put a Warning of some sort in the Subject line.

Best not to be a Rebel, you'll be around longer and still get to share your pics ;)

Hope this helps (keep you around)
