This Challenge starts right now and ends at October 20th, 2025, 24:00 GMT (so at the end of Monday in the UK). It will be some hours earlier in the U.S. If you are not sure about your zone, submit timely.

Maximum of three entries and ten exhibits per member, so take your time and choose carefully. 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place Winners will be selected only from Entries. Honorable Mentions may also be selected from Exhibits.

The topic of "Fall" has multiple meanings in English, all of which are allowed. You are permitted to use the "autumn" meaning even when living in the UK. But German (or likely Pennsylvania Dutch) specific meanings are out of scope.

The photo must be taken by you and only you (you pressed the shutter button, self timer or remote shutter release).

DPREVIEW rules regarding propriety apply. Any equipment and any post-processing may be used. I'll allow the use of AI as part of processing the final image, but if you used AI, that must be disclosed and it must not substantially alter the image content and message.

Please submit your pictures as a REPLY to this post.

Please indicate clearly whether your image is an Entry or an Exhibit. An undesignated post will be considered an Exhibit.

Comments on others' photos are permitted, but try to steer clear of influencing the judge, like by pointing out non-obvious greatness or faults before the results are published.

PLEASE consider making some of your posts Entries. We seem to cycle through the same few hosts of these Challenges. New and different hosts would help keep these Challenges fun with new and different ideas, and you can make as much or as little work of the hosting as you like. Thanks!

The 1st place winner will host the next Challenge, selecting the theme. If the winner does not respond within 3 days or declines to host, the 2nd place winner becomes the host. If the second-place winner declines, the 3rd place winner becomes the host.

Nice idea for a theme, David.

Interesting! I hadn't though of the language issues. "Autumn" would be "Haerbscht" in PA Dutch - pretty close to "Herbst". PA Dutch spelling is, very umm... flexible. Pronunciation would likely be not too different. "Die Fall" in PA Dutch would mean "a trap" in English. "Der Fall" would mean "a case".

QUESTION: How many Entries and Exhibits?

Greg

In November, the big surf is just starting to hit the North Shore. I was standing there admiring the surf when a young woman comes out of the shore break with half her board. She sticks what remains in the sand as a warning to others about the conditions out there.

Time for hours spent at that 'excellent' game, the dog owners version of Where's Wally, the daily edition of Where's The Dog Poo. What fun.

Fall has been my favorite time of year since I was a child. The weather is finally cool, the bugs are gone, everything is pretty, we fire-up the woodstove and the scent of winter (my second favorite time) is in the air. I exercise year 'round, run and train the dogs just about every day and shoot thousands of clay targets, so that I can fully enjoy this time of year. So far, my enjoyment of the fall this year has been constrained by as yet undiagnosed health issues. I will enjoy every minute of this wonderful time of year nonetheless!

Entries:

Fall here in the wooded Pennsylvania mountains is truly beautiful. Joy cooling off in a remote mountain stream while hunting ruffed grouse:

Fall in northern Michigan looks different - Bliss pointing a ruffed grouse amidst the birch whips:

Fall on the high prairie is also very different. Joy and Bliss working pheasant scent along a coulee:

Exhibits:

When I bought the land where we now live 30+ years ago, I planted a maple tree for my (now late) wife in one of the few open areas - she loved the color of the leaves. It still gets beautiful each fall in her honor:

Early Fall in the Custer-Galatian wilderness:

I love to find precursors of fall deep in our woods, because it lets me know what is coming.

I've posted this before (sorry), but it really gives a feel for Fall here. Looking out from "my" mountain in the early morning, with mist still in the valley below:

PA Dutch log farmstead in the Fall:

It's a great time to go for a ride - the little hot-rod on my lane:

Our woods themselves are spectacular - Joy on one of our trails overlooking a small high meadow:

Fall in the Clark's Fork area of the Beartooth Mountains:

Bliss cooling off in a farm pond while pheasant hunting in PA:

Fall comes early in parts of the west. Here Joy and Bliss are heading out for some mountain grouse hunting in early October:

As just an aside, in English "Fall" is pronounced "fawl". In PA Dutch (and presumably German), "Fall" is spelled the same, but pronounced very differently - as "faahll". It does not mean "autumn" in those languages.

Val, I love all your shots! We visited Japan once a few years ago, but it was late summer and colors have not changed yet. Still it was a beautiful place and we want to go back.

Kit

David, I usually find it when I step on it!

Kit
Indeed Kit, many are the times when it has turned up under my shoe when I have been walking around looking for it. :-D

David

Greg, I particularly enjoy the above three, really lovely!

Although it is not my favourite time of year, too cold and, of course, it is the harbinger of winter, I like the autumn for the change of colours, particularly the leaves. It makes for attractive walkies.

My wife has a collection of items that she uses to put up decorations for different seasons and holidays throughout the year. Fall is the time for Thanksgiving and Halloween in the US, and these two are photos of her creations this year:
