Manually replicate Pen F's Monochrome Mode to OM-D's Myset

Thank you guys that sounds perfect for me then. I have been shooting RAW for so long that it scares me not to have a RAW file. :) Yet I can see some real advantages to have a B&W jpg from the camera because so far from what I see they look amazing. My PEN f will be here tomorrow so I will be trying it out.
FYI, I did a writeup on the Pen-F monochrome a few months ago, comparing JPEG to RAW.

Does anyone know if EM 1 mk II has monochrome profiles. I realize it does not have a dial for quick access, but possibly is it 'buried'. I believe it has color creator, haven't heard about monochrome...

thanks

No it does not. I have both The E-M1 and the Pen F. The Pen F has the mono features of the E-M1.....plus the added Mono profiles on the creative dial. I have found nothing in the E-M1 menus to equal the Pen F profiles.

Yeah, it really is like getting the best of both worlds. I LOVE seeing in black & white in the viewfinder. I love getting the shot how I want it while shooting... but having the raw as a backup is a great bonus, just in case I'd rather have the shot in color, or at least have the original to work with... but I usually just shoot in jpeg & I love the results I get. I love my Pen F.

YES, IT DOES! They're not the same as what the Pen F can do, but they're still great if you like shooting in B&W, and I'll help you set it up! In fact, let's set up two of them for your EM1.

To set up your monochrome profiles in the EM1, go to settings > custom menu > D > Picture Mode Settings. Select monochrome, and while you're at it, select Custom too. Then, go to settings> shooting menu 1 > picture mode and turn Custom into monochrome. Now, you've got two monochrome profiles, in case you want to set one up differently from the other. For example, on my EM1, I have one monochrome profile set up as a standard monochrome and a second set up with a red filter.

Again, these are nowhere near as advanced as the monochrome profiles on the Pen F creative dial, but they're still very handy. I used them all the time with my EM1 before I bought a Pen F. I love shooting in monochrome! Love, love, LOVE!

I prefer the Pen F, but man oh man is the EM1 still an awesome camera. I've been recommending it like crazy now that prices have dropped. The EM1 is a ridiculously great bargain these days.

After I've heard so much positive about the Pen F's Monochrome Mode, I am wondering if I couldn't just try to replicate the settings and put it to my E-M1's or E-M10ii's Myset.

Has anyone tried this?
Nah, just shoot in colour and the finish in Lr or Ps, if you must use a preset build your own to match.

Then there is always TOPAZ B&W Filters !! .. Hours of fun :)

Using a preset does give the advantage of seeing in monochrome through the viewfinder/LCD whilst composing the shot.

E-M10ii manual- page 61 and 64 shows a Monochrome settings.
All, I think, Olympus cameras have monochrome settings. However these are different from the settings available with the Pen F Mono Profile and adjustment settings.

Try shooting raw and using the Nik effects in post processing.
Been there, done that ........won't match the Pen F. Some may like it better, but it will be different. Me I prefer the Pen F profiles and only use Nik when I've forgotten to switch the Pen F over to Mono on the creative dial.

I like this a lot.. Pen F Mono Profile 2, film grain off. Tried RAW and replicate with Nik, but failed.
Very Nice shots Gary.

If you convert the RAW using OV3 can you go into the Mono Profiles and change the settings as you can with most other settings for ORFs?

Or this..

Unfortunately I have not found that OV3 provides these Pen F profiles, at least when I last tried to find them. There are some simple Mono settings that can be applied, although if I'm dealing with the raw file, I prefer the Nik conversion.
I second the motion, those are beautiful shots.

By the way, have you downloaded 2.1 which is the latest version of OV3 to see if there is any difference?

I haven't done the OV3 upgrade so cannot comment on if these profiles are included. However, for most of my shooting the Large Super Fine jpgs out of the Pen F are plenty good enough for Black and White so they never make it to OV3. Minor tweaks in Lightroom is all I do.

I am wondering how that will be shooting with the view finder in black and white. I will see today when it gets here.

If you use the dial for the B&W jpgs can you also shoot in RAW + jpg ?
Yes, I always shoot the RAW+jpg when using the Creative Dial/Mono. Best of both worlds.
Only thing to note about this is that if you have the camera set to RAW only and then use the creative dial it will switch to RAW+JPEG, but the JPEG won't be the best quality. To have this you need to set the camera to RAW+JPEG all the time even if you aren't using the creative dial.

Hopefully this will be fixed with a firmware update.

I cannot find a link but I once ran across someone asking the same thing. The advice was:
Monotone mode, +2 contrast, low-key graduation

This is what I've been shooting and quite like the effect, and it has been commented on as emulating Leica's b+w mode well.

You have to setup the graduation in the menu system, the other pieces you can set in the SCP interface.

Menu -> Camera1 -> Picture Mode -> Monotone -> graduation
I added orange filtering to that combo on my EPL6 and the results were excellent.

You learn to see in colour or blank and white anyway, how do you think we all managed back in the film days.
