I have noticed that while I am in macro mode and very close to my cats face, I can hold down the shutter release and there is almost no flash delay or shutter lag for 5 or ten shots. (the cat is gone by then ;-)

On the other hand if I am taking a picture of a person that is 3 or 5 feet away, it takes quite a while for the flash to cycle.

I am using a G10, but it might be the same for any camera.

Is this because the camera knows how much electricity it needs to store in the capacitor and at macro, it just doesn't need that much?

it's because the flash doesnt have to put out as much light to illuminate something up close. the more light you use the longer it takes to recycle.
