MacBibble is out and it is fast!

Danilo,

I hate to say it, but thats a very slow machine by today's standards. Consider that the fastest machine in the lineup sports a clockspeed FOUR TIMES faster, and on a newer generation of processor which supports much faster throughput. Plus that machine has two processors, not one. You also don't have enough memory, and are very limited in how much you can add to that machine.

Bibble is about 3 times as fast, I'd say. I haven't timed it, but that sounds about right

Raw image processing is EXTREMELY compute-intensive (and disk-intensive.)

I now have a first-generation Ti powerbook (400 mhz G4) and a top-of-the-line dual G4 with high speed fast-and-wide SCSI drives. Bibble is useable on the Ti, but slow. (Still much faster than NC 3.5 or PS with the Nikon plug-in, mind. On my dual 1.25 ghz G4, Bibble 3.0 SMOKES. It's responsive enough that I can experiment with different settings and see the results in a few seconds. Very nice.

I had a 400 mhz G3 powerbook (a Lombardi) and on that machine, the Nikon photoshop plug-in took 5 MINUTES to open a NEF. On my 400 mhz G4 powerbook, NC 3.5 and PS with the Nikon plug-in both take about 30 seconds to process an image. At a guess, I'd say Bibble takes about 10 seconds to open the same image (I haven't timed it yet.) The G4 is a great deal faster at number crunching, even at the same clockspeed.

Eric,
After waiting for so long I hate to say it, but I am very
disapointed too....

I don't think I have an old machine: a Powerbook G3 processor 300
MHz with 192 MB Memory running OS 10.2.3 and using a Fuji FinePix
S2.

I gave it a try and the software is so sloooooooooooooow, in the
end I have to force to quit.
Imagine that!

You need a "minimum" of 384Meg ram to run Bibble. You only have 192. Bibble seems to work very well, but it is a resource hog!

From the Bibble website:
  • Mac OS 9.2.2, or Mac Os 10.2 or later.
G3 processor, G4 optimized for extras speed.

384 Megs ram MINUMUM undoer OSX. 512M under OS9. 512m or higher strongly recomended.

Depending on configuration, Bibble might run with less ram, but is unsupported.

Photoshop 7.0 or better supported for Photoshop Plugin under OSX. Plugin not supoprted under OS9.

I'm using a G4 400 w/ 700 mgs ram, devoting 512 to MacBibble.
I'm running OS 9.2.2

It's taking approx. 3 min. to complete a single file, EX takes about 6 min.
The browser is not working, can only get thru open dialog.

After correcting exp. compensation..I went to save as a tif and crashed.
This is as far as I have been able to get on several tries!

Sorry ed.

I've tried to support the older machines via Os9, but there are
some features that Bibble needs in the new chips and OS's in order
to run well, hence I wasn't able to support the older stuff.

That said, when you sell your pictures and get a shiny new g4, you
are in for a treat 8)
No need to apologize. I've just put my money into other things. You've just given me another reason to get a new machine :-) I understand the limitations in developing quality software, and I'm not one who feels any sense of entitlement or anger at being left out. BTW, it did open in 9.1....and tried to open an image, but hung up. I'll have to demonstrate that to the wife, so she can see the need for one of the new cheaper G4's.

I've had a couple of reports of trouble with .raf (Fuji raw) files, I am looking into and should have it resolved shortly.

it works on my emac, but on my G4, it causes Photoshop's menu bar to be grayed-out and unusable whenever I open a photo. I took it out of the plugins folder for the time-being.
