LX5 firmware update is here

Just an observation:

So, you need to default your camera for the Mac update to work.

I didn't see this before giving up and bootcamping into Windows. The Windows update worked straight away and I still have all my settings on my camera.
I did not need to default my lx5 to update from my imac (snow leopard)
But i only had joy when i dragged and dropped the file to SD card
Copy and paste did not work.

The miniature effect is only applied to the jpeg. The raw contains the original data so to speak without any effects.

However in the raw there is a jpeg embedded that is used as thumbnail for viewing programs and that's what you see with some viewers as preview. But that jpeg is a smallish size only, not the original jpeg.

Does this help?

Oh I see. Yes this answered it. Many thanks Hans. :)

I am unable to successfully update to the new firmware despite following all the the steps exactly as prescribed.

I am copying the V2.bin to this folder and trying to install the new firmware as prescribed by panasonic website.Nothing happens.I get no valid picture to play screen, after a while the camera goes to the "sleep mode".I turn it on after waiting fairly long and turn the camera on.Format the card off to remove the bin file as it is no longer needed.I recheck on the version display it still shows v1 and that is the end of the story.I repeated this at least four times, still not able to update.

NO.

Your card should contain the folders DCIM , MISC and PRIVATE but the upgrade binary file (LX5_V20.bin) should be placed outside these.

So ,for example ,if when you put your card in the computer it is shown as say Drive G: , copy the binary file to Drive G: and not one of the folders.
Good Luck

Thanks for letting me know that the root folder is outside of any other folders are that are there on the card, how on the earth one is to know that? unless Panasonic just added that hint !

I did just what you told and it was a breeze.

"you need to default your camera for the Mac update to work"

I don't think this is so.

I formated my SD card, plugged my camera into my MacBook (with the SD card still in the camera), dragged the upgrade file onto the card, and that was it. Everything subsequently went smoothly.

Just completed the firmware update. My LX5 is now set to firmware v2.0.

I had no problems whatsoever... as easy as apple-pie. Here is exactly what I did... 15 simple clearly mentioned steps unlike the original Panasonic web page which can be slightly confusing. Hope this helps some of you!
...
5) Insert the SD card into your computer. Delete all the folders on the card. Copy the extracted LX5_ V20.bin file from your hard disk to the SD card. After doing this all you will see on the SD Card is the copied LX5 V20.bin file... no other file or folders should be present/visible.
Deleting the folders on the card is not necessary. You just need to make sure you've put the .bin file in the root directory of the card, not in one of the folders.

Wouldn't you know it, I don't have a #$ &#@(#&& SD slot or an external SD card reader.
I copied the .bin file to the camera using the same USB cable I use to download pictures to my computer. When I connect the camera to the computer, it appears as another drive in my file management software, and you can copy files in both directions.

I know there's an SD slot on this computer somewhere, but it's been a very long time since I last used it, and I had to get the case replaced so it all looks different now, and I just couldn't find the slot.

Not so. There is no "Mac update." What there is actually is the .bin file in a self-extracting EXE format (which they call "Windows") and the .bin file in a ZIP format (which they call "Mac"). I use Linux, and have used the ZIP format downloads to upgrade both my LX3 and now the LX5.

And it's not necessary to set the camera to defaults, either.

Deleting the folders on the card is not necessary. You just need to make sure you've put the .bin file in the root directory of the card, not in one of the folders.
Yes, you're absolutely right.

But, in the interest of making everything very simple, I thought it would be easier if the SD Card were formatted. After the formatting all the folders are empty anyway. Hence, I suggested to go ahead and delete all the folders so that the only thing visible on the SD Card would be the .bin file... nothing else! Makes is much easier to remove confusion for those not too IT / firmware upgrade savvy. :)

San Diego Wild Animal Park and La Jolla this weekend for two type of shooting I almost never do: avian and night.

We'll see how it goes, although the 7D will likely be getting the bulk of my time.

I've never gone over 800 with the LX5. Looking forward to doing so.

Read the subject line in my post that one is "this"folder

I hope I can get some help:

1. I have a PC

2. I downloaded the firmware update from Panasonic's site and put it in my downloads file.

3. Then I installed per the site's instructions and got the correct read of the file size via properties.

4. I am using a USB card reader, plugged into a usb port, and the sd card has been formated in my LX5, it's blank, and now sits in the reader.

How do I download the firmware file to the sd card in the reader?

Thank you.

BTW camera battery is fully charged

.....and version 2.0 is installed.

I don't get why Panasonic is telling everyone to use a card reader, unless they are selling card readers. So you can just connect the camera directly to the iMac via USB, the same as you would downloading files, and drag (copy) the .bin file over to the mounted camera root? It couldn't be simpler. This works, right?
