LX 1 Noise Issue Vote

I must confess to not buying yet due to the noise debate. However, according to various posts on this forum, an updated camera is being released in March which will address this issue.

Owners have more time to explore the camera and can read and re-read the manual to learn things about the camera. Not all cameras have the same features and operating controls. So even if you are a good photographer it may still take a while to get the most out of a new camera.

Don't see photgraphs as art? True not all photographs are art. Not all are intended to be. - Sometimes art is the most accurate way to describe an individual photgraph.

The more I read of your posts the more I'm satisfied that you and I don't see things the same.

Hey thats life! not everyone thinks the same way. Of course you see photography as art, you're an artist. I dont see it as art, it can be sometimes...

Of course I am not known for mild words,....

Ansel Adams was not that good to me...a bit fake as such lol

I have many shots taken at ISO 80, which are great up to 11 by 14, noise not discernible

Even at 100%, it is not noticeable , except over areas of solid blue (like the sky,...)

I even have some shots taken at ISO 400, which can be enlarged to 5R, with minimal noticeable noise

Is Canon paying off some reviewers?

And I quote - 1. trademark Canon-like smoothness to it, 2. Wow, even some full size cameras don't have this number of accessories, etc in recent reviews

Have you all directly compared the Canon S80 to the Panasonic LX1?

The build quality of the LX1 is superior, its specs are superior, I dare say the picture quality is superior at ISO 80 and 100 (which most people shoot at anyway)

In the US, most shopping is done online, but in Malaysia, we buy from retail stores, where we can actually preview the camera first (plus, they have camera fairs, and exhibitions)
I tried both the S80 and the LX1, no prizes for gueesing which one I bought.....

coupled with noise at other ISOs and conditions, and the "fiddly" size & controls, and i had to send the little guy back. i think panasonic is producing some of the coolest and most innovative cameras going right now, but relatively ill-served by their noisy sensors.

just my opinion. your mileage may vary.

Well this is the issue, pannie are not getting the very best out of the leica lenses...which are a cut above the rest...

I didnt find it fiddly, lack of ovf/evf was not welcomed though

The fact there is a post asking for a vote, that owners feel the dp
review was not fair?

The LX1 should have been highly recommended, given that the kodak p850 is recommended despite it too being noisy and has numerous other flaws.

I'll have an opinion! Won't see it 'til early January, STS (sad to say).

I'm reading this thread with real interest, though. Photography has always been an emotional thing for me; interested in the composition and art of it. The science is sort of important and we need reliable gear, of course. Would it be fair to say that it depends on how clinical your vision is?

Well because of the protruding lens which is unique to this model in the Panasonic Lumix range... It is not really a shirt pocket camera, but it is still small enough for what I would consider a jacket / pants pocket cam.

Certainly a lot smaller (for the feature set) than many other similar branded models around.

My Leica D-Lux 2 is in my shirt pocket now. This camera is good enough that I have completly stopped carrying my DSLR's around. I guess they are now regulated for paying jobs only. So I do need them-for that.

Right now I'm more interested in mastering my new pocket camera and seeing just how good it is. I'm up to picture 492 and I know without question that I have not yet mastered the camera.

You will be very happy with this camera! It has a lot of features that you should learn to use. Then you will see how much control it has. I like to use the flash compensation, also EV compensation used with b&w works very nice in situations with contrasting light. This gives me the artistic control that adds to the image.

Yes, I would agree. I always shoot color and covert later if I want B/W. However, the B/W jpegs straight out of the camera do look very nice without having to tweak them at all.

If I want to concentrate on B/W with this cam I just set it on RAW (that way I still have pristine images with color if I want) and set the color quality to B/W to help "see" in B/W. In the past I had to use my knowlege of B/W and guess.. but with this cam and RAW I can have the best of both worlds.

I also found somthing nice. I set the Camera to B&W for normal jpg. (We know in Raw all the image data includes color-but lcd now diplays b&w). But even after setting camera to B&W I found if you set the main dial to auto mode it will display on lcd in color and only capture in color. Very usefull to me.

So now I kind of have 3 modes at the turn of the main dial.
1st- Auto mode on dial= color
2nd -P, A S & M will be b&w (if I have colors set to B&W)
3rd - Raw Mode, screen looks B&W (if colors set to b&w) but image data is Color.

( I got this tip from fellow poster -straightpipes).

Yep.. all this is very nice and this camera does produce a very sweet B/W image straight out of the camera.

When I used to shoot all 35mm, I would sometimes have one camera body loaded with B/W and the other with color transparency. I always found it difficult to shift my "eye" from color to black and white.. so I had to either get my mind set to B/W and shoot only B/W.. or visa versa for color.

Now, you can just shift with a flip of a dial and actually see what you're getting either way. MUCH better. ;-)

I just got a 24 set of B&W 4 x 6 prints today. I shot them yesterday with my 35mm film Ricoh KR-5 and 50mm f/2 prime. Still like it!

A very impressive thread. Will this lens beat my Olympus C.8080?. I am in the market for a change and the LX1 looks good to me on the size front.You have convinced me re the noise - I only shoot at ISO100. My other choice was the Ricoh GR.

I don't own the Oly C8080 so I for one can't compare. I will say that I use my D-Lux 2 almost alway's at the 28mm wide end. I don't like the zoom very much, but that's because I am taking (it's Winter Time) the majority of my shots indoors and without flash and even at night without flash. The safe way when used this way is not to use the zoom as it will slow down the shutter speed and cause blur. Perhaps someone from a warmer cliamate is taking outdoor pictures in good light and would be nice enough to reply to your question.

Off hand without comparing I'd say don't worry about it. The LX 1 uses a Leica designed lens and Panasonic I hear is one of the biggest mfr of lenes in the world. This can only mean quality. My lens is a great lens. No lens is the perferct lens but this one is excellent. What would make this lense better would be if it was f/2.0 or even f/1.4. As it is it's f/2.8 at the wide end and it is enough.

Hmm as nice as the LX-1 is...it is a bit of a noise monster in some ways, cannot deny it really! Smacks a little of the forum reviews of the FZ-30 when it came out, with 100% crops etc....

It is only a camera. just use it! enjoy! flaws and all
