Lumix G9 - Setting Aspect Ratio

If I select 1:1 aspect ratio, the (raw) photos with this setting still come out 4:3. The in-camera display of the images shows "4:3" but there is a 1:1 sort of mask imposed over the image, like it knows that I chose 1:1.

What's going on here? I always shoot raw and I think that in the past if I had set the aspect ratio to 1:1 that's how the photos were produced.

Thanks.

I just tried it on my G9 and the raw is definitely showing 1:1 when opened in ACR. However when viewed on Windows Photo Viewer its appearing as 4:3

It's 4:3 when I open with Affinity Photo and when displaying file "Details" in Windows.

The live view in camera is 1:1. Maybe it's just used to frame the image but doesn't affect the raw image?

Related, I wanted to test if a JPEG would be 1:1. Camera menu only has Raw+JPEG so I could use that but how would one set the output to just JPEG?

Its in the menu under quality or you can change it using the Q menu button.

As I recall, this is standard Lumix behavior. RAW files are the full sensor. JPEG files get cropped to the set aspect ratio. You can verify this by setting the camera to RAW+JPEG and viewing both files on your computer.

But, apparently, some RAW converters (ACR) read the crop settings in the embedded JPEG preview and set the aspect ratio for the RAW file to match...

Since I prefer to choose the final aspect ratio in post, this is a non-issue for me. I almost always shoot 4:3 in-camera and crop later.

Its in the menu under quality or you can change it using the Q menu button.
Quality menu item has five options, as described using the DISP button:

Record a RAW image only

Record a RAW and a standard JPEG image simultaneously

Record a RAW and a fine JPEG image simultaneously

Increase the number of recordable pictures

Give priority to the picture quality

There's no option that just says JPEG.

Here's what I have for the Quality options, with the meaning of each item as per my previous post:
