Luke (high key)

BTW the new 1:1 resolution is a vast improvement over the original - no softness at all. Side by side helps see the difference.

I really like the lighting and think the sharpness is spot on. My only niggle is the framing, I'm a fan of negative space and landscape orientation for portraits, and also have no issue with the head being clipped a little - I don't subscribe to this 'rule' it has to be more dramatic or left intact. For me though, the negative space on the left isn't adding so much to the composition - maybe as no part of the subject is turned or facing into it, which I think throws off the visual balance. I'd be tempted to try a square crop (which I think would also marry well with his intense expression) or frame with the negative space to his right.

Interesting. I felt like it was sufficiently sharp
It's tack sharp, don't listen to those idiots. They're same shooters who are constantly submitting underexposed, uncreatively lit, poorly composed images all the time.
The small JPG was looking soft guys due to conversion probably - but the full resolution crop resolved the question.

The only people who are "idiots" might be the ones that continually can't stay on topic and make ridiculous unsubstantiated allegations, attacks and name calling.

I really really like this portrait. I bet it would look good also cropped in even tighter and just give it a different look, but not necessarily better. Great job.

Top of head chopped off.
This is normal and reasonable as long as the cutoff does not cut into the forehead and make the head look bigger than it is.

In my opinion, the OP's photo has reasonable usage of the tight crop in this case

That last post was for someone else and not the original poster. I like the image and think its a great photo. I do something similar myself so I think your off to a great start. Great image!

Top of head chopped off.

Also, am I seeing significant barrel distortion here?

How is that possible with a 75mm lens?

You never seem to understand that some photographers like to crop into the subjects head because It looks better.

Its ok Tedolf, the model doesn't feel a thing!

And in this case, I did it intentionally because he has a flat spot on the right side of the head which makes his head look a bit pointy. But I should have cropped in further!

Agreed. If you were going to crop, you should have cropped in further.

Thanks.

I was worried about that!

Its a very nice photo, not much to say except to suggest try different contrasts. You may or may not like it better that way - it does appear you aimed to the low contrast image you have there. Oh and perhaps try different crops of the head, or maybe not at all. Again, purely subjective (I may have cropped a little more).
