I want a very fast image viewer to delete unwanted photos after downloading them from my camera, but BEFORE importing them into iPhoto...

any ideas?

Try Photon from Green Volcano Software. I haven't used it myself (I use ViewIt), but it's supposed to be very fast. I'm not sure I can list the link here due to forum rules, but if you search VersionTracker or MacUpdate it will appear in the listings.

I'm new to the Mac b ut why not just use the quick look option to view the entire folder as a slide show?

Just select all the images you want to browse, then double click one of them. They will all open automatically into "Preview". If you look around in preview you can get large previews quickly and you can delete directly from there.

Only my opinion. It's worth what you paid for it. Your mileage may vary! ;-}

How do you delete the photos from preview?

You just hit the command / apple key plus the backspace. That is the procedure for deleting files through all the apple OS.

Have fun :-)

I don't know which camera you are using but IF your cam has no orientation sensor this is a very nice tool too:

apple/command butten plus L or R to rotate the image. When quitting preview it will ask you if you want to save the changes you made.

Just off-hand, why do you need to delete them before importing them to iPhoto? Are they RAW files? If not, importing them should be really fast and you can browse and delete them easily within iPhoto.

The ideas suggested for Preview works in Tiger as well...

Send me the $129 I just saved you :-)

Have a look at Nikon View NX as well
Free - and browses the embedded JPEG in RAW files

Once they're in iPhoto, I often do not bother to take the time to delete the bad ones... I am focused on finding and tweaking the good ones... which means the bad photos are parked in iPhoto which is bloating the size of my iPhoto library... something I do not want...

It will be much easier to force myself to delete the bad photos before importing into iPhoto, rather then waiting till after I've found an selected the good ones...

Nice, is that lossless rotation? I have used Phoenix Slides (free and fast folder browser) which is supposed to use lossless rotation. I was going to suggest that but I have to give Preview a try.

With Phoenix Slides I can automatically reorient my pics if I have rotated them using my Casio EX-Z750 which has no orientation sensor. I do rotation in camera because I like to go thru the pics without having to turn the camera with portrait pics plus I get the automatic reorientation with Phoenix Slides. And I do rotation before importing with iPhoto to avoid the only-rotated-"duplicates" in Modifieds folder.
