live view and auto focus

Is there any way to use the live view along with auto focus? This was one of the big reasons I jumped on the 40D bandwagon and I can't seem to use it but for manual focus....

--Yes you use the af-on button on the back of the camera

From what I'm reading, the AF-ON is only available in the creative zone. After putting it in that setting and attempting to operate the button, nothing happens when live view is on. When live view is disabled, it seems to work fine....am I doing something wrong?

--it has to be enabled with c.Fn III-6. (top of page 114.)

also it will drop mirror down for a second

also if you do manual focus at 10x zoom it will be the most accurate focus you can get
