I posted the below in the "Retouching" forum and no one responded. I'm trying it here to see if anyone wants to offer thoughts..

Lately I've been having problems in my desktop version of Lightroom Classic. If I add a few images to an existing folder in LRC and want to incorporate them into the catalog by using "Synchronize Folder" the process gets to a certain point and then LRC just hangs and Windows ultimately notifies me that LRC is unresponsive..

More information:

The process seems to proceed as expected to a point. It counts the changes showing the number of photos to be added to the catalog and then it opens the import dialog window and starts showing the image previews where it ultimately would gray out the existing images leaving the newer ones to be imported... It is at this point where it hangs and never gets to finish identifying the existing vs new images.. It just stops processing and after n minutes I get the hang notice.

But if I change my approach and go to File -> Import Photos and Video... and point to the folder that has the new images the import works just fine. It shows the images, grays out the existing ones and imports the new ones. The problem only occurs if I try to "Synchronize a folder".

In actual operation my catalog works exactly as expected.

At one point I tried to "Optimize" my catalog. This too hung and failed to complete after over 30 minutes and Windows notifying me that the program was no longer responding.

Every time I exit LRC I have the catalog backed up to the my NAS. I did open a just previous backup and the catalog opened just fine with all my images and keywords.

Information on my environment:

LRC is by subscription to the Adobe Photography plan. Version 12.1 Camera Raw 15.1

The catalog is very large with 116288 images in the catalog. I should mention that I extensively keyword my images and all images are keyworded with at least one keyword and most with multiple keywords.

I run Windows 11 Pro always updated with the most current updates. Currently 22H2 as of this writing.

My images are stored on a Synology DS1019 NAS with 5 / 4TB HGST 7200rpm drives It is only at 2tb used.

My catalog is on an internal NVME.m2 SSD D: drive a Western Digital 2tb SN850x rated to 7,300MB/s - Only 116gb consumed. ONLY the catalog resides on this SSD. No other files.

My Windows and programs drive is on an internal NVME.m2 SSD C: drive a Western Digital 1tb SN850x rated at 7,300MB/s

My desktop PC is self built:

ASUS ROG Strix X570E motherboard and the CPU is an AMD Ryzen 7 3800X 8 core 3.9ghz

I have 64gb of Corsair Vengeance RGB memory

My video card is an ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3080 Ti OC Edition 12gb GDDR6X

I'm thoroughly perplexed...

I can only really guess, as I have not had the issues you are describing.

When I have had LR hang up, it has often involved communication with an external drive that I don't always have turned on.
The catalog is very large with 116288 images in the catalog.
I have over 260,000 images.
My images are stored on a Synology DS1019 NAS with 5 / 4TB HGST 7200rpm drives It is only at 2tb used.
This is the only real difference between us. Someplace in the back of my memory I recall that Lightroom could sometimes have issues with a NAS.

I don't have or use a NAS but I would venture a strong guess that you problem lies between LR and the NAS.
My catalog is on an internal NVME.m2 SSD D: drive a Western Digital 2tb SN850x rated to 7,300MB/s - Only 116gb consumed. ONLY the catalog resides on this SSD. No other files.

....

I'm thoroughly perplexed...

Thank you, that is something I should look into… it is the most logical course to pursue.

Hi,

I wanted to follow up with a thank you for your suggestion.

I was connecting to my NAS via ethernet. Ethernet from the NAS to my ASUS GT-AX11000 router wat CAT 5e, but the Ethernet connection from my desktop PC was CAT 5 only.

My router has a highspeed port and my motherboard has a 2.5ghz ethernet port as well.

So I purchased upgraded Ethernet cables from Amazon Cat 8 (what the heck why not) and replaced the feeds. Even the initial replacement of the Cat 5 from my desktop to my router made a difference. Then replacing the Cat 5e from my NAS to the router and the sync problems in Lightroom Classic went away.

So thinking further with your suggestion I did more. My NAS has two Gigabit RJ45 network ports. In addition my ASUS motherboard has two ethernet connection ports. One @ 2.5ghz and one Gigabit port. So I direct connected the 2nd NAS ethernet port to the 2nd ethernet port on my motherboard.

I mapped a new network drive to the direct connect port and migrated Lightroom's catalog to use that mapped drive. It now performs very well.

Thanks again for your insight.

Great solution.

I am going to build another desktop later this summer or early fall, but was going to shy away from a NAS. I may have to reconsider.
