Lightroom and netbooks

Rather than get lost in the general and long netbook threads I thought I'd do one specific to the question I have.

I've read most of Netbook threads #2 and #3 and tried a search to find what I'm looking for but with no luck so apologies if I am repeating an old question.

I am thinking about getting a eee PC 901 (XP with SSD drive) or Samsung NC10 which is getting great reviews although it’s a little heavier and more expensive than the EEE PC's. I want to use the netbook with lightroom v2.2 to do quick reviews of the photos I’d taken on holiday, delete outright rubbish and whilst importing automatically backup to an external 16gb memory stick (dust, water resistant). I really want to keep the weight down.

I have a general concern about the robustness of hard drives as I tend to move around a lot on holiday which is why SSD appeals even though it is a lot less storage. All my PC problems in the past have been HDD failures although strangely none on my laptops.

I have about 14GB CF of cards which is just enough for two weeks and a bit of early pruning of bad photos plus freeing up some CF cards would be useful. Along with ability to email and post photos online of course...

Does anyone have any experience of using Lightroom on a netbook or thoughts on the durability of hard drives in netbooks?

I've got an NC-10 coming that should arrive today or Monday. I intend to put Lightroom on it as soon as I've upgraded the RAM (already arrived), so if you can wait a bit I'll let you know if it runs okay.

I'm considering the hard drive question too. My original plan was to upgrade the stock hd to a 7200rpm drive, but now I'm wondering if it would be better to put in a 64GB SSD, since prices are down on those, and the power efficiency increase has been reported to be significant.

I'm using Lightroom on a NC10 and am pleasantly surprised at just how responsive and usable it is.

I did upgrade the RAM to 2gb as soon as I bought it & also run CS3 & openoffice with no performance problems.

I'm no expert re hard disk robustness - but I travelled extensively for work with my trusty laptop for 7 years, treated it fairly roughly and never had any troubles. As long as you're backing up, I don't think you'll have anything to worry about

Enjoy

I have a Samsung NC10 - a great alternative to an Epson photo bank type of device for storing photos when you are away from base, 160Gb and cheaper :-)

Net books however do have small displays, something like 800x600. LR system requirements state 1,024x768 for the display. Just read DaveBaker's post so it will install OK, that's good.

Yes, LR2 installs fine. I have all my panels set to 'auto hide & show' to give me as much room as possible to work.

The only screen size issue I've had is that I can't see all of the Adobe Camera Raw screen - & it can't be resized. If I have to, I can navigate the bottom of the screen 'blindly' using the keyboard.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want to be working on a screen this small all the time - but for working on the move it's great.

Yes, I've got LR 2.2 on my Acer Aspire One. But I don't use it for image review and deletion of duds. For that I use FastStone, set to display the embedded jpegs. These are good enough to tell what's obviously junk for deletion and the process is a lot faster than using LR for that purpose.

I have an eeePC 100HD with XP Pro. The native screen resolution is 800x600 as well. With Programs that require 1024x768 I set the resolution to 1024x768 and get a screen with scroll bars so I can move the window up and down to get at all portions of the screen. I change it back when I am finished with the 1024x768 program. Works fine this way.

Thanks for the tip. I don't get scroll bars - but just moving the mouse to the top/bottom of the screen scrolls the display up/down.

It's good to have all of Adobe Camera Raw back - Thanks again!
