Light meters

Some 30 or so years ago I bought a Sekonic L-418 and the spot attachment for it. I still use it today. It will measure incident, reflected, etc., though not flash, which I rarely use. I do occasionally use the internal meters in the D1X and D1H, but that's very rare--even when shooting sports.

You need to understand what you're metering and why. Having said that, I find incident readings give me the best and most consistent results in most cases. I use spot metering for landscapes and such. For me, there are fewer unpleasant exposure surprises when I use the hand held meter.

I second Sekonic, the Sekonic L-358 is an excellent choice.

But, like it was said above, measuring light is a lot more than just getting a reading from some electronic device.

If your digital camera has a display, which acts like a built in polaroid, there is no point in spending the money on a light meter , imho.
I'd rather spend some time with google to get the basic informations.
