....a decrease in the number of votes allocated to each member?

By this I mean, 4 votes instead of 5, or maybe even 3?

Just a thought.

Obviously, there are a slew of ways to vote.

My photo club just changed the way they vote on a similar challenge to 5-4-3-2-1, with 5 being the best. It is a force ranking scheme. But they have 35 photo or so to vote on. We have 20 max., of which you can vote on 16.

The real issue is for me is that there are lot of good photos that sometimes stray from the topic. Most of us also give out a lot of ties.

But we certainly can try anything. We should wait until Paul comes back and comments before we actually do anything.

The math is easy - it is just a simple spreadsheet.

If we were going to change, I'd suggest a 4-3-2-1 forced rank system (totals to 10). No half points, no ties.

Jim, to be honest I would be just as happy with no voting at all and a rotating system where each person next in line would be in charge of the next challenge.

For me, the point of the challenge is that I have to shoot in the present, and also at least take pictures of something at least vaguely reminiscent of or tangential to the topic.

Voting and winning is nice, but the real purpose of the challenge is to force us to take out our cameras and do something with them in our current busy lives.

Voting and recognition are not really necessary because under comments almost all of us get some kind of recognition. Just further thoughts.

But you are the boss.

I am not trying to be the boss - I just handle the voting.

As for me, I too would be happy with that rotating system of Next person up. We have all earned it at one point or another. What I like about us is that we all have different styles; and sometimes a different style is hard to compare to another style.

As for me, I am like you in that I enjoy the kick in the rear end to get me out taking photos. If we didn't have to vote, we could even compress back to a tighter schedule, where we shot more often. I could even see us having two challenges overlapping for a week or two.

The plus about voting is that not everybody has the time or maybe even the inclination to comment -- and voting is sort like a forced commenting. And the way we vote is sometimes altered by "let me vote for Jim's best shot, even though another shot of Traveler's is better". Also, a vote is taken at the end of a challenge, and occasionally someone enters a photo at the last minute which knocks an earlier photo off the pedestal.

Maybe we do a combo of the two - auto rotation of the person running the challenge (thread, topic, etc) and a reduced forced ranking of 3-2-1 vote that doesn't really count for much and doesn't effect who sets the next one up.

I like the idea of auto rotating who sets the topic. As for voting, I like the idea of trying out a different system. If we don't like it, we can always revert to what we have now. A 3-2-1, or 4-3-2-1 forced ranking would be worth trying.

I was a little elusive a week or so back with my absence but I can fill you in on some details.

My wife needed abdominal surgery to solve a recurring problem. She went in very early on a Monday and was discharged late on a Thursday. Early indications appears that surgery was complete success but recovery is a hellish painful slow process and I’ve been her sole caregiver and will be for a while. That and keeping up with all routine household duties it’s been somewhat overwhelming as I knew it would be which is why I knew I had to pull out of the challenges for a while.

While we are seeing baby step improvements (reducing pain meds) she still has a ways to go and requires my full attention and I’m 100% focused on her needs and recovery.

Please move on without me for the time being and hopefully before long I will be able to return to the challenges as she gets stronger, improves and cleared by the surgeon for more normal activities.

I'm good with any decisions you guys make as to the future direction the challenge takes. Like yourself ‘s I do it for the enjoyment, not winning and would be good without voting and changing to rotating selection duties. (Put me last on the list if this option is choose)

Like Jim said it will change the timings of the challenges. Would you be in favor of every 4 weeks, 3 weeks or making it simple and use the monthly calendar as a beginning and ending point.

I like the "monthly" calendar idea for its ease. But Like the shorter challenges to keep me shooting. So lets add a 5th shot to Eligible. Most of us ignore or minimize the Exhibition. And it will keep the volume about the same anyway in a month.

Proposal - We go to a monthly rotation, starting on the first and running to the last day. And we are allowed 5 shots in Eligible. I'll set a forced ranking 4-3-2-1 vote which we I'll trigger on the 1st day of the next month, but it doesn't affect who sets up the text challenge and topic.

And because we are near the end of Oct anyway, let's extend CIC 275 until Oct 31, permit a 5th photo, use a new forced rank voting, and start CIC 276 on Nov 1.

I'll start with the order of folks as I have it in my mail list on the voting sheet, but move Paul to last. That puts me in charge of November.

And if we attract new contributors ( or get an old one back) like Dave V, he can contribute photos if he doesn't want to setup galleries if he "wins".

Your MIA is very understandable -- and not unexpected given the circumstances. In all we do, I generally say the "family comes first". Your doing that for Paula is expected and understood by all. Please give her our best and our hopes and prayers for a quick and full recovery.

I’m happy to try the proposed new method. Apologies for the tardy response.

Paul, I hope your wife’s recovery is swift and complete Warning: she may become accustomed to your increased involvement with housework.

1. Recovery from surgery is just terrible, rotten, horrible and the only thing a person can do is endure.

2. Unlike some modern theory, I am in favor of pain meds, don’t be stingy with yourself. God invented pain meds to help us get through difficult times, they are a golden bridge for which we should be thankful and use them without fear. (I know this may be an unpopular opinion...but it is mine, my advice, my honest opinion, why should I lie to both of you?)

3. Thankfulness...we live in times of modern medical miracles...20 years ago, Paula may not have survived her abdominal illness...be thankful for living in a time where some temporary pain, and it is temporary, remember this, allows you to live.

4. You will get better and enjoy the sunlight on your skin, the love and hugs of your grandchildren, priceless moments will be yours again. Remember this, smile and be thankful. This pain will pass.

5. Oddly, after serious threats to our life....there is...serious psychological damage, there is physical recovery to be sure and to be thankful for...but being alive again can be a little problematic...be gentle with yourself. Let me say this again, be gentle with yourself, take a deep breath and exhale...be gentle with yourself.

Best Wishes, Traveller

CIC 276 is ready to go.

Since Sparky is caregiving at home, this challenge is set at home.

The topic is chosen.

The Gallery is ready.

It starts Nov 1.

I'll post a thread early as DPR is off the air for a few days beginning Oct 31.
Paula was showing some impressive improvement then all of a sudden she hit a wall and now we’re going backwards. She called the surgeon this afternoon to tell him what’s going on and he wants her in tomorrow for a quick checkup to rule out a potential problem that might be developing . Could simply be a normal recovery response when they remove a section of your large intestine. I feel so bad for her. Paul

Very sorry to hear that. I hope it's a brief reversal. Sending healing wishes.

No doubt, this is tough for us to hear. Tell her we are sorry to hear this, and wish her a full and fast recovery. And stay strong yourself - our prayers and thoughts are with you as well.
