Hi

7 years ago I bought a Leica M9. Loved it but sold it lately because I found myself missing too much critical shots due to manual focus, especially when photographing my own toddlers.

I do also like landscape photography and portraiture in general.

I considered the Fuji GFX since I was hoping to get a bit the WOW look in my pictures, which I did have several times with the Leica lenses on my M9 CCD.

However AF is probably not fast enough. I had the original 5D and I also used to work with the D700. So now I am considering the Nikon D850 and 5DMkIV and hoping to get great IQ as well.

Color output (skintones especially) and lens character are of critical importance to me. I am not into video.

I had frustrations in the past with AF finetuning and focusshift so I am hoping not to encounter those things too much any more.

So I would like your opnions on a possible lens setup for the Nikon, considering I want brilliant IQ and in general prefer fast primes. I want to take benefit of fast AF too on the other hand.

I was thinking of:

- Primes:

28/1.8 - my father has it and I can use his copy (the 28/1.4 looks tempting though and is probably a better choice for the high MP D850)

35/1.4 (probably Sigma Art but would consider the Nikkor AFS 1.4 if focus accuracy should turn out to be an issue with the D850).

35 mm is one of my favorite focal lengths and since the Canon 35LII is so good, that Canon lens on his own for me makes me doubt about the choice for Nikon. The Sigma should be great also but focus accuracy is an absolute must.

58/1.4 for portraits

85/1.8 - my father has it and I can use his copy

- Zooms: 16-35/4 and 70-200/2.8FL (I think focus breathing is an issue for me)

I do consider other options for the 70-200 like the 70-200/4 + 105/1.4, but AF speed is important to me and I guess the prime has lower AF speed.

+ maybe a Nikon 200-500/5.6 or Sigma 150-600 contemporay for the occasional wild life/nature shots (not BIF)

Thanks

Peter

Coming from something as light as a Leica to something as heavy as a Nikon FF system, you might appreciate the lighter primes. Personally I think the 28 and 85 1.8Gs are tremendous values. Both are light and compact but also very capable. The Sigma Arts have never appealed to me because of the weight. I'm a big fan of light primes. I'd consider the 18-35G too and if you don't need the 2.8, the 70-200/4 is a great lens. I sold my 2.8 to get the 4 because I found I left the 2.8 home a lot because of weight and generally was using the lens outdoor in good light anyway. The 4 shines in every possible respect and is light enough that I take it more places.

I have the 70-200/2.8E FL which has no breathing and it has one of the fastest AF in Nikon line up. It has faster AF compared to 200-500 when TC-20E III is attached. Just my 2c
