K-r all ISO performance

Considering it's ISO 25600, it actually looks pretty good to me.

I think it would be fine for snapshots, if uncropped and kept to a 5x7 or so print. But there's such a lack of detail, colour accuracy, etc., that I don't think this would be useful for any serious work. This is not at all surprising though - we're talking ISO 25600 here!!!

I'd be happy with a good quality 6400 (or even 3200, for that matter).

It looks like slightly out of focus or just soft because of the kit lens used in that one.

Google Pentax K-r ISO samples and you'll have plenty of references.

For sure.....even if it is just on par with the K-x, that is saying alot. The added features here make it a knock out...once the price comes down, of course.

As a K10D owner, to me a good quality 3200 sounds like heaven.

But then a D700 sensor is hardly "current". The D3s sensor is probably able to lay the same distance from the K-r as the D700 can from the K-x.

Nonetheless the latest crop of APS-C sensors put up a great show.
By and large however, APS-C seems to be at a point where it can pretty much match the current FFs high Iso performance. The canon 7D gave us a taste of it last year and is now confirmed by what we see. This is good news, as my shooting conditions often bring me over 800 ISO.

You're right... D700 is a 2yr old piece of &($)@... ;-) Lets see what dpr gives for RAW noise:

At high iso:
D3x has 1 stop adv over Mk4 (and only 12mpix)
D3 is on par with Mk4
7d is almost on par with Mk4 up to 12000ISO
7D has 1 stop over k7
Kx has maybe one stop over k7 as well ?

So there is a certain degree of likelyhood that we be able to get APS-C sensors that get close to Mk4 ISo perf up to Iso 6400 or even 12000.

This being said, only time will tell...!

Today's APS-C sensors perform nearly as well as the 5d Mk1, which has a 5 year old sensor, and in some regards they still don't perform as well (in other regards better).

Today's full frames with similar technology will still always perform about 1 1/3 stops ahead of an APS-C sensor. You can't defy physics. A larger sensor will capture more light.

From what I have seen from the samples online, the K-r does not surpass the K-x, but it is at least at the same level and I have had no problem getting ISO 6400 pics out of my K-x in very low light conditions. I am sure the K-r will also be equal to the task.

You are probably right on this.

But what matters most is that high ISO quality from the latests APS-C cams is probably good enough now for 99.9% of people.

I am sure some will spend a lot of time nit-picking over pixel level noise at ISO 25600 but it falls more into the "mine is better than yours" kind of arguments than anything really useful IMO.

(And that comes from someone loving his 5D and who will probably buy the MkIII is a few years... go figure! ;-) )

Until we possibly reach some kind of high sensitive sensors without amplification noise, if even possible. A limit would be when sensors can give decent exposure without too much noise in conditions where AF or MF will fail because of lack of light...

That might happen in 5 years time or 50, but if / when, then APS-C vs FF debates will no longer have noise as the main theme.
