K-5 replacement

he seems to be pretty accurate is his claims about previous models based on his posting history.
Pentax have still enough K-5 bodys on stock till September, but now they are produce the replacement.
Name is not K-3.
A couple of bodys are waiting for daylight this year.
It will be a very interesting Photokina in september.
The qualityrange is on high K-5 level of course :)
They are not using the actually Sony 24MP Sensor.
I like that :)
I think in Summer Pentax will tell something about it for public.
Best regards
What's your source for this information?

I hope that you are correct about the sensor, but what is your source for that little tidbit?

Cool. If the K5 gets replaced, I'll only be able to get it for even cheaper.
That's exactly what I'm thinking too.

There won't be a K5 replacement. The K5 is a wonderful camera that should give you years of fantastic performance. Surely Pentax will bring out other great dSLR. But surely they won't be replacements for previous cameras.

There is nothing wrong with the K5, so it doesn't need replacing. Hopefully many new dSLRs will come out before my K5 needs replacing. And when that sad moment comes, there will be another great camera around.
We are now into a disagreement on semantics. As I see it, at some point, Pentax will stop manufacturing the K-5 and will start manufacturing a new camera model, presumably with higher specifications of some kind. Most people would call that camera a replacement for the K-5, but you are free to call it anything you wish. Whether it will be significantly better than the K-5 is yet to be determined, but generally speaking, technology gets progressively better, not worse.

Rob
Sometimes the technology reaches a point where it can't get better without the components being improved and e.g. attempts to cram more pixels into same size sensor reults in worse results not better.

As mentionned by some others, it's still the best APS-C out there!

Save AF.

The AF system has come under fire several times, for speed, for accuracy under tungsten light, and for tracking ability...

After their CP+ announcements, Ricoh have shown us that they mean business and are listening to us. The mirrorless APS-C, the 560mm, the affordable primes... are all things we asked for.

So i'm guessing that most of their efforts will be geared towards improving the K5's AF system. But i don't see why the'd be in a hurry - it's still the best APS-C out there!

PS, Pentax/Ricoh, I'd also like:
1. A separate joystick for selecting AF points
2. A dual card reader
3. The best possible OVF (which me might already have)
That's it. :)

Hey, I'm just curious why there is no word of a k5 replacement yet.
People have been asking this question or one like it since 30 seconds after the K-5 was announced. It'll happen when it happens, not a moment sooner. Meanwhile, I continue to get great results from both a K100D and a K-7.

The only replacement for a K5 is another K5 and a K5 is even better value today. ;)

True, but sometimes results get better even with more pixels. Dpreview has already pronounced the Sony 24MP sensor the best APS-C sensor that they have ever tested. Personally, I don't want 24MP, but I cannot deny the amazing advances in sensor technology that have occurred in the past few years.

Sounds like you have inside information ? :-)

The points i mentioned - focus points and flash - seems to me bo be things i cannot imagine Pentax are not working on. They have been criticised for their flash system for a long time, and if they want to stay in the race - and everything points in that direction now - they are of course working on that as well. Besides many other things, of course?

I'm guessing the sensor is a variant of the K01's? 14 bits instead of 12, faster output, 4 channels etc.

Hopefully they will have improved flash, tracking and AF too :-) In that case, I'm likely in for this one.

Having 16 Mp will avoid the huge files over 24Mp. I imagine if they end up having a model above that of K3(?) it would be 24 or more Mp's.

Btw, thank you asahi man. Your info makes more sense to me than most others.

Likely we'll all know by Photokina.
The replacement of the K-5 will NOT have the Sony 24MP.
It will have a new! 16MP Sensor, made by Sony.
We will see the new Body in September/Photokina.

Earlier this Summer will come the new lowbudget camera, later than the 2 other at Photokina.

Hey, I'm just curious why there is no word of a k5 replacement yet.
Some of us are still waiting for a LX replacement ( probably not due until 2021 when the 'C' will be announced ) .

With kind regards

I'd like to see a rotating lcd screen and auto focus video.
That'd make me very happy.
(I don't even have a K-5 yet, will hopefull upgrade from K-7 this summer).

Well, in case your source is reliable than the future model might be my next Pentax camera!

For me personally, the K-5 is already one of the best dslr cameras on the market, to be honest, I do not see too many things to improve on it at the moment... It as close to photographic perfection as possible.

If they are not going to "improve" the new cam with a 100MP super ultra CMOS whatever sensor, despite the high-pixel marketing craziness all around, than .... well.... wow... just a big big applause for the current Pentax marketing department!

For me, the only real tuning could be an improved QC, especially the focusing preciseness (even the MF is slightly misaligned on my early production K-5, clearly visible on shots with limited primes below F2.8).

Promising rumors, anyway :-)

Tibor

As noted by others here, what's to improve? Where does it lack for you? When I considered the K-5 I thought about newly-introduced features that I know of (no birdies speak to me, alas :)) that would justify my waiting.
  • Focus peaking, very nice.. but not enough.
  • More video controls, ugh - not my need.
  • More pixels, please no - I was happy at 12M with the k-x!
  • Tilt screen.. I'd love that, but not if it risks the build quality or WR sealing
Given all that, and the occasional online deal, I bought into the K-5 and love it. Replace away, Pentax - I'm set for a while.

Just don't pin me down on what 'a while' really means! :D

The K-r is discontinued, the K-5 is still in production.
