JPEG 2000 compression

Either you're going to have to translate this article into English
for non German speakers (i.e. - me) or you're going to have to tell
us what this plug-in does so that we can comment.
1. There is a Eng version of this website
2. Photoshop plug-in is a free demo, so you can just download it
and see, what it does. Basically, it opens and saves images from
Photoshop to .jp2 image format.

I noticed this option in my Thumbs Plus software. In a nutshell
can someone tell me what jp2000 gets you, over straight jpg?
So what does it get you? From my understanding, not much.
It might save you a little space, but the overall image quality
is no better.

I just looked at a page recently which showed that high quality
'standard' JPGs (> 2.5 bits per pixel) look just as good
(sometimes better) than JPEG 2000. You really don't get
much, except a slightly better compression ratio, but a
high quality 'standard' JPEG will look just as good (it will
just be a little larger).

BTW, at high compression ratios JPEG 2000 introduces its
own style of image artifacts, which in many cases looks no better
(if not worse) than straight jpg

Kind of a block variety of LZW? Or some smarter prediction?

Not that it matters, doesn't sound all that efficient, and for
lossless I'd just go PNG anyway.
Agreed! It is probably best to keep things separated that way to avoid confusion: lossy JPG and lossless PNG.

Here's a good overview of the "old" formats (j2k not listed), including a description of JPG and PNG, just found it today:
