Iview is back...any one experiences with it (beta/ full version)

The forums are RIDDLED with unhappy folks crashing all over the place... I'd wait a bit to see if this shakes itself out. MAC users appear to have the better of Windows at this point...

Having major issues... on 2 systems. one with C1 demo installed. the other no C1.. no dice there unfortunately.

Glad its working for you... you should be proud - you are in a select minority!

Again though.. MAC version appears much more stable than Windows... guess they have the better developer team!

Since my first post, I have come across a major speed issue. I downloaded a new shoot of about 300 photos, and wanted to use MP to do the first culling. I found its display of rendered media from the Canon D60 raw files to be just way too slow. It uses the CO engine to produce the larger image (Media view) for viewing, but I couldn't wait 4-5 sec per image.
I needed to use Capture One to cull everything.

I expect this to be solved in the next release.

It is still quite fast on processed jpegs.

... The new dark interface UI makes things hard to read (highlight color shifts from grey to white for example instead of say.. light blue). Most folks are complaining this is just a rebadge at this point and this is still essentially the same product that MS destroyed...
After some reflection, I think the dark UI complaints may be justified; I'm using a large catalog, but not doing extensive tagging right now, so I haven't decided whether it's a hindrance or not.

I wouldn't say MS destroyed the product - they didn't do much at all with it. Sitting on it for 2 years, with no useful developments because they had no idea what photogs want, could have been de facto destruction in the marketplace though.

Yeah.. I agree.. MS destroyed it.. I'm sure PhaseOne had good intentions with the purchase.. but honestly - I'm sure it is difficult to just pick up someone else's code and start banging away on it - especially if they want to fully integrate C1 at some point into the product. Surprised they just wouldn't have started from scratch but perhaps it was easier to pick up all the users that already used it.

I do hope this product succeed - competition in the market is very slim for really good DAM products and it keeps everyone on their toes - but they need to turn this around quickly or all will be lost.

About 8 days into the trial, and have been using it extensively I've decided to buy as it's sooo much faster than aperture and LR on this 2007 imac.. The keywording color coding and all is just great too. I'm not great at organizing this amount of materiel, 50,000 images in the digital, and 20,000 slides and negs here we go.. The fun part is just flipping through it all at blazing spped..

I sure they are serious about getting the bugs out of the windows version too. To much going for it not too!!

I think the building of the full size previews is a ltitle slow if you choose to use the Capture One engine if you just used the Mac previews it most likey is faster.. You could also choose to make the program build big previews in the first go but that kind of defeats the point of having a DAM with a manageble catalog size..

The pitfalls of trying to develop the same product on 2 platforms using different code sets I guess... One version is bound to get the short stick while the other gets the love and attention. Enjoy the program... I'll wait until it has matured a bit and then give it a go... speed is critical to me but not crashing on startup/import is more important at this point in the game.

I am a Capture One fan who has only recently started using Expression Media 2 to catalog my photos. Judging from some of the posts on the Phase One Forum, Media Pro may not be ready for prime time. Phase One is generally very responsive to user comments and needs, and I fully expect that they will address problems in a timely fashion, but for now, I will let others deal with teething issues.

About to pull the trigger on Media Pro.

Just letting you all know I'm pulling the trigger on Media Pro

It's fast to zip through my 50 GB of files

Loads of tools for catergorising

Intergrates with Capture one pro..

Is faster for looking through images in a vast library than both Aperture and Lightroom..

I'm not getting crashes and such on my iMac 2.4 OS X 10.6.2

So the only thing to think about the price, if I was on a budget I could have gone with Aperture, but as I already sprung for Capture one getting Meida Pro. is a no brainer really I feel it will make me more productive in the daunting job of straightning out my archive. It's not a job I want to spend any more time than I have to doing..

Actually I've been waiting to do this archive work for the tools to get quick enough to make the process as painless as possible..

Regards

Well - the mac version is much more stable than the windows version - not surprising given that the mac version has always been where the developers heart is.. from all I've read on the forums, this software is still in a beta stage with many missing features (GPS drag/drop for example) that were in previous versions. I'm waiting it out until things settle down - especially on the windows side - before I consider it..

a lot.. GPS, hierarchical keywording, version control, advanced searching and filtering... the list goes on and on.

Wow... 10,000 images in a weekend is a lot of photos.. how does one seriously go about reviewing and editing them as a single user? Surely, this is a team effort and I would think Photo Mechanic would be a more suitable software? Do you really keep all these images in a database for keeping? Its just a lot of images (and seems like a lot of work)... What about RAW processing... how long must that take??
I'm sorry fuego, I lost track of this thread long ago, and now any response is likely completely mute. To answer your question, there are indeed multiple people working on these files. We can't bother with RAW at this scale - we're not looking for the one killer pic or handful of great ones. We white balance and monitor exposure rigorously and only shoot jpgs. A world of difference vs RAW. Funny thing is, for my own personal uses, I only shoot RAW.

I guess it depends on workflow. If I go to versions of a photo, I'm in CNX2, and save back to the folder or subfolder where the original was anyway. I'll save an NEF to keep my workflow in tact, and also a jpeg when done. The only searches I do are based on filename, though Picasa now has something called tags that I haven't looked at yet. Filtering on lens, camera, aperture, ss, etc. would be useful at times.

As far as "catalogs" you'll have to explain that to me, as Picasa does have albums that can collect photos from multiple folders and allows you to view them, upload them, or convert them to movies, etc. as a collection. Is that what catalogs are in iview?

I know Ken Rockwell (who I respect) loves iview, but I find it difficult to move out of Picasa given how well it works for me. I invested in Lightroom and the upgrade, but never "got" it or its editing methods. To me nothing beats CNX2's control points and operation stack, but that's obviously a personal choice.

Let me know what you think...
a lot.. GPS, hierarchical keywording, version control, advanced searching and filtering... the list goes on and on.

Why keep multiple copies of the same image on your drive...? Why not just use the RAW image to generate the other images as needed? This is why I love Idimager - I can easily create other versions of the image from the original RAW (editing with LR and converted to DNG) without even having to create another copy... want to upload to facebook - done within the software. Smugmug.. same thing... email - no need for a JPG.

I've been a Media Pro user since it was a Mac only solution (indeed I worked with the original design team when I was at Apple). When it went to Microsoft my heart sank - but they didn't do too bad a job, just it stagnate for many years.

When I read that PhaseOne was taking over the software I thought that this would be great - finally someone would inject performance and features into the application.

Of course after paying the upgrade fee and installing I now see that things have gone from baddish to WORSE. The fee for upgrading delivers no new features other than a new skin - to make things worse though. the performance has REGRESSED SIGNIFICANTLY - there are few apps that handle 75k images well, but the older version of the app coped really well and felt fast, slick and smooth. The PhaseOne version feels about 4-5 times slower at rendering big images - I tested against the older version on the same machine, with the same settings - sure enough, browsing media files at full screen now creates ugly massively pixelated images and a 5-6 second wait while it pulls in a quality image. I've decided to ask for my money back - this is an truly appalling update.
