I'm just looking for a simple music player that will play single songs or whole albums. I've never really got on with iTunes, (perhaps I'm too dim), it keeps jumping in uninvited when I'm using preview, and I find it's been copying tracks to it's own folder, though I've just now turned off "copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library". I suppose I can delete music in the iTunes folder and the original is still safe? Can I disable iTunes until I ask it to wake up specifically? I have no interest in syncing stuff to other places. So, something free like Winamp, Foobar or such? Thanks for any ideas.

Turning off that option affects new imports. If you delete existing music in the iTunes folder, you may be deleting your only copy. (Your mileage may vary - e.g., as long as you have your original CDs, you could recreate a deleted AAC or MP3.)

Maybe try-out VLC Media Player. You'll find it outside of the App Store.

VLC is free alternative.

I also enjoy VOX player.

You are welcome, VLC and VOX completely replaced itunes, for me, as it slowly turns into a beast that eats a lot of RAM so I even removed it from a dock.

I also use VLC for albums, although I listen mostly online; I got a Meridian Explorer DAC to bypass the internal sound card, makes music a lot more enjoyable (yes it's subjective), even streamed through the BBC; it only gets along with one of my two USB ports on a 2014 rMBP, for reasons only Steve Jobs knew.

I'm assuming your on windows since you mentioned foobar, if so look no further, it's the tits. I switched to mac a year ago and plan on buying a second (windows) machine largely because of foobar. Jriver has quite a following too.

I should have mentioned foobar is not simple and has a fairly steep learning curve, I have not used jriver.

Jesus, I just realized this is the mac forum. Check out swinsian, $20 though. Foobar is not available on mac.

I'm a recent convert to the wonders and otherwise of the Mac ecosystem, and still trying to get it to do my bidding. It's working pretty well really, (just don't get me started on the cloud storage of photos!). Thanks.

You are welcome :)

You don' have to store your images on iCloud

You can store them locally only if you want. Check the settings in the System Preferences/iCloud

Hope this helps

I'm of the same category. I get on OK with Amazon Music. I think they have 3 categories of subscribers and as a Prime user I'm in the middle. Easy enough for me to find what I want, no additional charges for music..

Over the years I've worked hard to understand iTunes and every time I got close Apple changed it. Something about making it more friendly or some such...I think they're culling the aged. I gave up.
