Image quality comparison

Gary,

Welcome to the forum. Thanks to your post I popped over there and read the thread. Its nice to know that the 707 still reigns (at least in that test).

I gotta tell you though IMHO I find most of it to be the equilvelent to the age old debate over how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. If you shot the same scene with the 7I the, 5700, and the 707 and then asked someone which camera took which picture they probably couldn't tell you.

Thanks for the welcome Harry.

Re the test, I was quite surprised at how

a) fairly even the three on test were (I think youre right about the angels on a pinhead thing)
b) how far away they all were from the 'Gold Standard'

I am looking to buy my second digital camera and have been following the forums here for a while. I was eering towards the sony (but i will wait till after sept 25 to see what else might be released), but the Nikon 5700 also looks OK now that phil has released his full review.

I think my decision based on the current crop of cameras, (mainly the 707 and 5700)and taking it that picture quality is roughly on a par, it comes down to the following point:

If the autofocus on the 5700 is acceptable, than it boils down to do I want or need the faster lens of the 707 or is the 8 X zoom better to have?

I am not too worried about the memory stick and proprietry battery issue as i have a Sony TRV 950 camcorder, so it would actually be quite handy to have the same memory format and it actually uses the exact same battery (and hence charger) as the 707.

Not sure if I have missed out any thing glaringly obvious? Maybe someone can enlighten me?

Gary,

I had the 707 since last December and for me its a great fit with what I want to do. The MS is not a big issue fir me. My old camera used CF media but as wife wife uses it now that was no loss. If they don't make a 256 mb MS, I go out and buy 2 128 MSs. The battery life is great, I usually get 2 1/2 hrs per charge. I have a back up battery but I have only had to use it once.

The color saturation is a non-issue for me. If the red gets at of hand as it tends do on occasion I just beat it back in my post processing. I've noticed some upset on the Nikon board with the AF and MF. I would suggest you check out what the 5700 users are saying.

The best thing to do is get your hands on each and try them as best you can. In the end thats the only way to see which is the best for you.
Good luck with your choice.
