Image overexposed when camera is turned on (aperture is far from how much it is overexposed), but changing aperture just a bit fixes it and it is not overexposed anymore, what could be the problem? Could it be settings or what? My lens is samyang 24mm with sony a7s iii body. It doesn't happen all the time but tends to happen more often in bright environements.

It happens only when I turn on camera. Overexposing is directly connected with aperture blades being wide open. When I change aperture it fixes, but why it doesn't have correct aperture (as of showed on screen) when its turned on?

Sounds like the apertures sticking .

Hold the camera and lens facing you , turn the camera on , is the aperture fully open ?

Then set the aperture to a higher f/ stop .

F/22 for eg . Turn the camera off . Leave it for a while .

Then do the same . When you turn it back on it should still be set to f/22 .

Likewise on the screen it should say f/22 .

If it hasn't stopped down , that could be causing it .

It's odd though , as the camera meters off the sensor , so stopped down correctly or not , the exposure should still be correct .

It's the first thing to check though .

Is this happening with any off your other lenses ?

This is a wild guess. Do you have pre Af on ?

my guess is could it be trying to do something in P mode ??

again wild probably wrong or right I don’t know

First of all thank you for response!

It is new lens, maybe a two months old. Used only two times a week. Can aperture sticking be the thing out of the box? Because this issue emerged just after a few weeks of using, but the later the more it is consistent with ignoring what is set on screen when turning on. What is funny is that if you leave it turned of for a few hours and turn it on - on first time it is ok (but not always, but pretty often), but on second time (when i turn off, turn on) it does this and almost every second time after that.

"Hold the camera and lens facing you , turn the camera on , is the aperture fully open ?"

Yes.

"Then set the aperture to a higher f/ stop . F/22 for eg . Turn the camera off . Leave it for a while . Then do the same . When you turn it back on it should still be set to f/22 . Likewise on the screen it should say f/22 ."

Camera screen shows 22, but lens iris is clearly wide open at 2.8.

"It's odd though , as the camera meters off the sensor , so stopped down correctly or not , the exposure should still be correct ."

Aperture is incorrect yes, it is wide open but camera shows f22 (the one I had just before I turned it off). Blades looks decent and they changes ok if I change aperture after turning on, just that it stays incorrectly like that like forever if I am not changing aperture after turning on.

"Is this happening with any off your other lenses ?"

I have this only lol, that is why it is so annoying :/

If the lens was built faulty , then yes , it would be like that out of the box .

Try cleaning the contacts on the lens , it's possie the camera body and lens aren't communicating properly .

You would need to try another lens on it to confirm the camera body is not at fault , but my money's on the lens .

Go to a camera store with your camera and try another lens on , doesn't matter what lens , just to rule out your cameras as the problem .

Did you buy it in a shop or online as a grey import ?

I also think lens could be faulty, because I mean it is relatively cheap and maybe qc was not so good (on aperture, electronic side). Not the cheapest of all, but like fourth, fifth cheapest lol. It is not far for me to bring it to warranty so I am thinking of doing that. If it is fine.

Both bought at camera stores.

If lens is fine, than I don't know. Will try your advice with lens testing, but probably will bring lens first so I would get answer faster!

Take both to the store you got the lens from and have a play around with some other lenses .

This is where it pays off buying from a shop !

Keeps them in business and you get better service . :)

I am afraid that specific store I bought is kinda quarantined right now in my country since it is in shopping mall... but there are some that are not in malls and open, maybe they would let me even though I didn't buy :-|

As far as they need know , you are buying !

Your going in to try a couple of lenses , and you'll decide what to buy after you get home and look at the images on a PC screen . ;)

You'll probably look a bit odd when you put the lens on and your looking in the wrong end of your camera , but just tell 'em your new at this ! :-P

You should find it's the lens at fault .

Put a Sony lens on it first ( any ) and you should see the camera works correctly .

In which case you've found out where the fault lies .

The shop you bought the lens from you say are closed currently .

Are they just closed to the public , or are they still trading mail order , phone sales and online ?

If so , once you've tried your camera elsewhere to confirm it's only when that lens is fitted it's acting up , you should be able to post it to them and they can send you a replacement .

Samyang is reverse-engineering the mount specifications, so when an issue arises with those lenses it's best to confirm with an actual licensed third party lens (Sony, Tamron, Sigma etc).

It depends on what setting you have the camera in. Not sure if the A7s III will be exactly the same, but on the a6500 if you turn "Setting Effect OFF" for "Live View Display" the aperture will stay open until the shot is taken. If you have it on, it stops the aperture down all the time and basically performs "stop down metering"

Imagine its still in rma, I feel like those guys are not doing anything. Guys always hardcore test lenses in all settings before 14 day return window expires because this is terrible

Is "rma" where you bought the lens ?

I take it you sent it for repair and it's still not sorted ?

I mean return merchandise authorization by saying rma. Yes I brought it to where I bought for replacement, return or repair and they still did not completed any of those :/
