If You Pulled Trigger Pre-Ordered RP Why? And Why Did You Skip the R?

I ordered the RP for the size. I have a 1DXII and 5DIV for more robust professional needs. A small full frame travel kit is what I am after. Marry this with the EF-40mm f/2.8 or nifty-fity... and take it on the road.

Why did you pre-order the RP after skipping the R? As for me, I pulled the trigger on the RP, not the R. I wanted a small lightweight secondary FF camera for travel and daily carry, and to start I could put an EF 40 mm pancake on it and then go from there down the road. I skipped the R because it was relatively expensive and no match for my beloved 5DMk4. At some point when the Pro Body R comes out down the road, I will look at that as a second body to go along with my 5DMk4. Bonus question: When they say ships on 02/27/2019, do they mean ships from Canon to reseller, or that's when the Pre-Orders ship to customers?
Here are my thoughts. Yes the R would have been nice since its an upgrade from my current 6DMK2 but the price kept me away. I suppose I could have gotten the R if I sold my 6D but i just love OVF and the way it handles with large lenses so the 6D stays.

Now I got the RP and the RF 35 lens as a travel camera and now thinking of getting another video centric camera (4K) for the same price as the R witth RF35 lens. I might just get the A6400 with the cheap kit lens. Yes I may have some GAS.

The RP and its eye focus will allow me to get better images more eye focused with the 135 F2 which was always a challenge with the 6D. On top I think the RP and the upcoming do it all lens RF 24-240 F4-F6.3 will work nicely. This is equivalent to 16-160mm F2.6-F4.2 in APSC terms. Fuji can't even give me such a lens.

So no R instead RP and A6400 plus my 6DMk2.

Just having coffee and playing with the RP. It came with 2 batteries but I got a third because Canon ESTORE sells the LPE17 for $59 dollars CND and my Camera store matched the price.

My fist initial video tests shows the 1080P FHD to be better in quality compared to my 6DMk2, The video just seems crisper and not as mushy.

The adapter is nice . Mounts very tight very snug. Works very well my 24-70 F2.8 Mk2. Maybe because its a new camera but the high ISO images look cleaner compared to my 6D2.

I am using the newest DPP for uncompressed RAW instead of my usual ACR. I like it.

Here is my long-winded story of how I ended up with the Canon RP:

My son destroyed my DSLR about 5 years ago when he tossed it out of the Thule cargo rack from the top of the SUV thinking it was my coaching bag and not my camera bag. I have been shooting with a cell phone ever since (and by the way ... the Pixel 3 is a great mobile phone camera)

Being able to take decent photos with a mobile phone lit a fire in me and I had the bug to get better and take more pictures. I even joined http://gurushots.com online photography challenge to test the waters and see what other people are doing. There are so many amazing photographers out there, it's really insane.

That really got the fires stoked and I started looking at what was out there. The logical choice was the 80D to replace my damaged 50D. But then I started reading about Full Frame and decided that I have to have that for the low light advantages over APS-C. The 6D MK II was where I was headed. Then I read about Sony and mirrorless and the amazing A7III ... And now I wanted that. But that was too much money for a hack photographer like myself. But mirrorless man .. smaller and lighter and all the lenses I already own. That sounds perfect. So I thought about the M50 because the A7III is too much for my blood at this time.

But the M50 wasn't Full Frame .. so it was the A7II that was now the apple of my eye ... but now I have to consider a whole new menu system, ergonomics, and unfamiliar waters. And from what I could tell, the AF and face/eye tracking benefits were not as good in the A7II so I was compromising (at least in my mind) with one of the features I thought I really wanted.

So I kept looking and found the R. Damn that looks pretty sweet. I would love to get my hands on that. I could care less about the video after all. Seems like the perfect camera for me ... but then I read the price... and I was back to putting Sony Cameras in my cart at every online store I visited.

Then I stumbled across Canon Rumors and heard about the new RP coming out and at only $1699 (rumored) USD. Damn... that's still too much. Maybe they will have a sweet deal when it gets announced. I should wait.

In the meantime, I read about Panasonic and their newly announced cameras that cost a fortune and won't ship for like 2 or 3 months. Damnit, I can't wait that much longer if Canon takes just as long to deliver on preorders. I should just get an A7II or a grey market (scary) R for $1800ish. Still too much because at that price I could learn the Sony interface, right?

But then February 13th came around and the camera was going to be only $1299, come with a couple of very usable free items and offer $200 off a lens I would really like to get my hands on (RF 24-105 F4) AND it was shipping in just two weeks.

Combine that with the familiar Canon UI, the grip and a feel that is great in your hands, and the fact it can work almost natively with my current lens lineup and I was sold.

So at 11:30 PM (EST) on Feb 13th I put in my preorder and on Feb 28th I took my first Full Frame and mirrorless shots with my first L lens.

I am very happy with the purchase. Someday I hope this camera is not enough for me and I can hand it down to my son, but for now. its the RPerfect for me!!

I recognized it as ground-breaking and didn't want to have to wait a long time for mine. Got it quick and haven't been disappointed. The R was too expensive and heavy for what I wanted it for.

Looks like a whole bunch of 5D4 owners got thr RP over R, myself included. I wanted a secondary light weight body that can share my existing lenses. Sold my M6 and got RP.

i think it's more about the size than weight. If you want to be lightweight, you can still put a 24 or 35mm prime on the 5D4 to become relatively lightweight.

I still like DSLR as it's great under bright sun. LCDs are hard to see under the sun and the EVF isn't the same.

Enough said, i am tempted by the RP everyday. :)

Go for it, the ergonomics and usability are fantastic, despite what the reviewers are saying. Have not felt the need to pull out the 5D4. Holy cow DPP is slow :-x

Beautiful shot!!!

How's the eye detection function working with the 50L? This is one of my fave lenses and I'm curious how it works with the RP with the supplied adapter.

Thanks.

José

Works very well. This was taken with it.

yes, I am one of those 5dmkiv users who got one to be a smaller lighter camera too. I have no intention of giving up the larger gear though, but sometimes, I just want a smaller camera that produces good photos.

Right, she just doesn't like her picture taken, much less posted in public. We actually have our 45th anniversary in about 2 1/2 weeks, so I've obviously learned (mostly) what areas are just not negotiable :-)
45th? Is that all?

Hmmmm... where are you based?

Only reason to skip on the R and go for the RP in my opinion is cost. The R weights like 100 grams heavier than the RP. But it has a better battery, better sensor, better evf etc etc.

For the 1k price difference I completely get it. But depending on where you are you can easily get deals on the R or even consider a reliable gray market option. I am talking particularly about shops like panamoz. They for example have a good warranty (matches that of the manufacturer), and they don't even fix the camera. If something happens you let canon fix it, you supply panamoz with the quotation/bill and they reimburse you. Many have good experience with them. (essentially they import camera gear to the UK out of HK).

So... for the EOS R with the 24-105 f4 L it comes out to 2450 euros or body only 1800 euros. Compared to the RP's 1300 price tag the 500 difference more than justifies getting the R. Anyway. just my 2 C

I've had my RP for a couple of days and it's not exactly what i had hoped for. Yes it's small but not that small and when I mounted the RF 24-105 it's not small at all. I guess there are limitations on how small a FF can be. I don't know much about those but I know what I would have wanted.

So other than size the RP is a step up from my older 6D and 5D2 and I will certainly keep it. I spend the first afternoon studying the Guide Book and shot testing and went through the first full battery charge so I'll have to use more care with battery usage and order extra batteries.

This is the second camera I've had with an Electronic Viewfinder and is a big improvement over the first, an early Fuji X100 which was the worst camera I ever had in over 70 years of photography. I love how the eye level viewfinder displays the shot right after shooting.

The included EF lens adapter works perfectly and together with the 40mm pancake lens makes a fairly small package that delivers very sharp pictures with good contrast. I mounted the EF-S 10-22 from my SL-1 and it performed very well and can be used for 4K video. It has so many features it'll take my poor old brain time to absorb them but all together the Canon RP is a nice package that's fun to use even though it didn't match my unrealistic dreams.

Cheers

Wow, Glenn. 70 years of photography! That's incredible. You must have some amazing memories you have captured through a lens.

I take it from your post that you were hoping they would squeeze a FF into an M mount with EF-M type lenses. Maybe they will some day, but for now they did a pretty amazing job getting the FF into a body like the RP. I for one don't mind the extra weight of the lens. I absolutley love the feel of the RF 24-105 on this body, in my hands. I am not sure much bigger would be great,0 but I love the feel of this combination.

Happy shooting with the RP, post some pictures in the "Post your RP Photos" thread. I am trying to learn not just by shooting, and reading and watching videos, but by learning from the experiences of others as well.

I read this and said “wow, that’s almost exactly my thoughts.” With the exception that they didn’t make it as small as they might have - that is a positive for me. Putting a zoom on this camera, the bulk comes from the lens and not the body. I have a Sigma 24-135 F2.8-something on my RP, and it is nothing but lens barrel.

i also think the 40mm pancake lens would make a great street camera setup. I also think a wide EF-S zoom would be a great way to use the 4K capabilities. Here’s to many more years of photographic memory’s!

Thanks for your post.

Cheers
