I just got this right from Sigma US

the SD1 willl come in from Japan at the end of MAY.

it will go on sale at the start of June.

I DO NOT have any info about the price.

this is NOT a joke or a troll post.

(please dont hound them with calls )

one other thing I want to add is that this update is for the UNITED STATES ONLY.

I have no info on when it ships to the other areas of the world.

I believe Sigma generally distributes in Japan first, so if this is true, we should see releases soon...

Did they say anything about what year it'll be...... lol..... sorry I couldn't resist.

I honestly hope they can even meet a July date in Canada. I'm hoping on being one of their first sales, if things work out.

The masterpiece is created by the artist, not the camera.

received today after an email query to Sigma USA:

Thank you for your interest in Sigma products.

Unfortunately no set date is set.
We apologize for the inconvenience.

name redacted (redacted, what a great word, kinda like the word "rendition")
Customer Service/ Technical Support
Sigma Corporation of America
Fleetwood Court
Ronkonkoma, NY 11779

nice try though........

I will repeat.

I was told first hand by the SIGMA USA main office:

"SD1 will leave from the plant in Japan at the end of May.

They will be packed , made ready for sale and sold in the USA
the first part of June. "

perhaps its a case of the left and right hands not communicationg.......

I do hope sincerely that your cummunication with them is the more accurate.

best, Mike

You would think they would be packed at the factory and be ready to sell once it has arrived in the USA.

maybe they are packed but need some paperwork added ?

that is a total guess on my part, the much more important thing is that
the talk of this camera not coming out for a long time, say next year - does
not seem to be the case at all , based on what I was told today.

looks like start of summer - not next year.

I am very hopeful that the information you received is indeed correct. I have had similar experiences from some Sigma personnel who leaked info that proved to be accurate even though there was no "official" confirmation. I guess only time will tell if the information you received was correct.

The harsh reality with Sigma cameras is to never be an early buyer of their product, particularly one as new and different as the SD1. They never get them sorted out before release to the market and leave it to the masses to fend for themselves when the hardware/firmware/software falls apart. I will wait at least one year before buying the SD1.

I remain skeptical till sample images are up.

On the other hand, May is still Spring, their indicated release date. So there's good reason that they try to deliver by May, though availability may be a month or two down the track.

"Never be an early buyer" applies to products generally, not only to Sigma. For example, you should not upgrade to a new version of Windows until service pack 3 comes out.

I've always been an early buyer, enjoyed my cameras and had no problems right from the first release time, and I intend to buy the SD1 as soon as I can.

If I'd waited "at least one year" I would have missed some priceless photo opportunities.

Sandy, I might jump on an early release Sigma if I didn't already have a DSLR camera, but since I own more than one it's not likely I'll miss that priceless photo opportunity. I do know that if a certain camera had a certain feature that would allow me to photograph things I normally couldn't and wanted to, then I'd be an early buyer. With Sigma there a really two reason I won't be on the early bandwagon for the SD1 and they are: 1) To make sure all the bugs are out 'cause I don't like sending cameras back and forth to repair shops. 2) The release price of Sigma cameras is always a little on the high side and tends to drop rather quickly. Now, I'm not saying that Sigma cameras are over-priced compared to other cameras, but that the retail price usually falls faster than other makes. Of course the SD1 might prove both of those reasons for waiting wrong, but I'll still get by with my SD9-SD14, Canon and Fuji gear until I can't stand the wait anymore. Still, would like to see this SD1 make it out this Spring. JohnW
