... I dragged both cameras out today and, shooting both in Jpeg, got some interesting results.
I'll give my conclusions up front.
The S100 fs is a better Jpeg machine than the HS-10. The NR which kicks in on the HS-10, though not always (??), can really destroy detail. Even before doing this, I had determined to shoot Raw, now even more so.
That being said, the HS-10 seems to have better colour in Jpeg, using Chrome that is.
If comparing Raw to Raw, the S100 fs has some advantage, but the HS-10 is still doing very well. See the last image.
Incidentally, I took several side-by-side Jpeg's. The results were similar, or worse. So, I shan't bother showing them
Cheers.
Image 1.
HS-10 left, shot in Chrome, ISO 200, DR 200%, -0.3 EV.
S100 fs right, shot in Astia, ISO 200, DR 200%.
Both cameras at about 150 mm. Images are not edited Not even sharpened.
Image 2.
Both images cropped. Not just magnified, but cropped to original image dimensions, albeit in the vertical.
Image 3.
S100 fs left (28 mm) and HS-10 right (24 mm). Same settings as above images.
Images are not edited - Not even sharpened.
Image 4.
Same as above except magnified in PS to 50%. I won't show 100%. It's not pretty.
Image 5.
All is not lost.
HS-10 left, S100 fs right. ISO 200. Both shot in Raw and processed in Silky Pix DS Pro. Images processed to squeeze the last drops out, without excess noise. No NR was applied.
Both images sized to print at 16 x 21" and shown in PS at print size.
